The Guidebook graphical user gallery has some excellent pages preserving the history of OS interfaces through screenshots. It also has an excellent timeline of operating system releases and comparing icons of the various platforms. Definitely worth a look for anyone interested in the history of interfaces or interface theory.

Apple has announced the winners of its Dashboard Widget Contest.

Send SMS, by Alco Blom, provides the ability to send a message on the spur of the moment to someone's cellphone without having to launch the Address Book application. Send SMS is a light-weight widget which uses the XMLHttpRequest functionality of WebKit to send the messages users write and fully integrates with Mac OS X Tiger's built-in Address Book using a Cocoa-based plug-in to present the user with a pull down menu of contacts with mobile phone numbers.

WikityWidget, by Michael Robinette, is a personal notepad with automatic linking. Using a simple notebook-style interface, WikityWidget lets you easily jot down and organize notes with hypertext links so they're easy to find and instantly available via the Mac OS X Tiger Dashboard. It applies Wiki technology in a new and interesting way on the Mac and demonstrates the powerful potential of Widgets to leverage technologies in Tiger.
