I graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.A. in film, and the next logical step was to head west to Hollywood. I spent roughly a year in Los Angeles, hacking through various productions, doing this job and that, until I landed what I would call a "Real Hollywood Job." This was for Mr. Jon Avnet, A-list director, and producer-extraordinaire. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s the fellow who directed "Fried Green Tomatoes," "Up Close and Personal," "Red Corner," and "The War." "Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow," is his most recent production. As one might guess, the job was an awesome one. I was thrust headfirst into Hollywood, and through this, I began to realize that I needed more balance. I had spent my college days cultivating my artistic side, making films, playing in a rock band, and ignoring the business-realm almost entirely. In working with and for Jon Avnet, I learned first-hand, how much of a business-machine Hollywood really is. This was not an oversight of mine, but I might argue that one must experience Hollywood first-hand to firmly grasp this business-machine notion. Either way, my eyes had been opened, and I felt confident that my next "adventure" would be into the realm of business. In 2002, I moved to Columbus, Ohio; this was a difficult move, as I'd already gotten the proverbial "foot in the door," but it was my commitment to my girlfriend (Caroline) that acted as both the catalyst and the anesthetic for this move. She was on a three-year contract with WBNS (channel 10) and the long distance relationship was simply too much to handle. Knowing I'd be in Columbus for nearly three years, I decided I would go back to school. This is when I enrolled at Otterbein College in the M.B.A. program. I also worked an administrative position at a local bank during this time. It was quite a turnaround. These classroom doodles, amongst other creative endeavors (see the above website), have helped my inspiration to survive the transition - all in all, creativity has been very important to me. Fast forward to October, 2004. It is once again time to move, as Caroline's contract has expired. With excellent timing, I have just wrapped up with my M.B.A. at Otterbein College (where most of these doodles were drawn). I will be moving to Chicago, the creative-mecca, in the next few weeks, and look forward to the opportunity to mix business and creativity wherever it is that I might end up.
