Crystal Clear 1.2

by Leland Scott

June 16th, 2007

Transparency in this theme is literally crystal clear, demonstrating feasibility and techniques to enhance usability of a theme with clear interface elements. The theme comes with two variants: Lite, which uses translucent white menus, and Dark, which uses translucent black ones.

Version 1.2 utilizes a technique to enable totally transparent menubars that don't suffer from extra backgrounds superimposed by "menu extras." Be sure to read the instructions on using the included crystal menubar files and background pictures.

Crystal Clear also bundles a custom version of the open source utility SetAlphaValue, which magically "turns on" transparency in Mac OS X Cocoa applications where it otherwise doesn't exist. The download includes detailed information about how to use SetAlphaValue.

The Crystal Clear download includes the following files in the main folder:

  • CrystalClear_v12.guiKit (Both variants of Crystal Clear and four desktop pictures, courtesy of the artist known as Xanthic, customized to include the Crystal Clear menubar and each available in four standard resolutions.)
  • SetAlphaValue4CC (Installer for SetAlphaValue)

Crystal Clear includes theme elements for Address Book, Automator, Camino, DevonThink Pro, Font Book, iCal, iTunes, Mail, Preview, QuickTime, Safari, System Preferences, ThemePark, and Yummy FTP.

There are five subfolders in the package:

  • docs: The ReadMe file for SetAlphaValue and this Welcome document.
  • menu extras: Here you'll find folders with menu-extra graphics and installation ReadMe files for Chronosync, DropCopy, FastAndSlow, FastScripts Lite, iKey, MainMenu, Sound Source, Yahoo Widget Engine, and YouControl Tunes.
  • other extras: This is where you'll find the iCan theme, the Growl style, and a folder for the extra SafariStand toolbar graphics.
  • pics: Contains full-screen previews for both the Lite and Dark variants of Crystal Clear. (Note: These screenshots do not show the latest changes in the Crystal Clear theme... they are the ones released originally with the Dark and Lite versions.)
  • crystal menubar: This is a new folder that contains the Crystal Clear system menubar in Photoshop (PSD) format, ready to be applied to desktop pictures of your choosing. Simply pick the PSD file corresponding to your screen resolution, and add it as a layer at the top of the image.

This is really very very good!
Its like having millions of themes at your disposal by a mere change of
desktop image.
I think you have just raised the bar.

This has to be the absolute BEST theme out there today! It looks way better than the new transparency effects we just saw in Leopard. This is one very slick, well thought out theme. I have had it since it was first introduced at MacThemes and I haven't used another one since. It's really that good!

Very cool! The only problem I have is that all my text seems to be grey, yet in the pictures text is black. Black text would be much better, as some of the grey gets very hard to read. Am I missing something? How can I get my text black, like in the pictures?

Adam, I'm guessing you are using the new beta of Safari, and without checking, I guess that the theme doesn't support it yet.

Hey lunged... I don't know why you're seeing grey text... I assume you mean grey text in the menus, right? I'm wracking my brain and can't think of a reason for that. Feel free to email me if you have any more clues about the problem.

Adam, Wingtales... yes, Safari 3.0 doesn't support any ShapeShifter themes at this time. A real bummer, but I haven't found a solution, and I haven't heard of anyone else who has, either. Hopefully, Unsanity will come out with an update to ShapeShifter soon!

Thanks to all of you for the kind words about Crystal Clear... much appreciated.
Also, to the admins here at InterfaceLift... why am I listed as evanescence ringtones (whatever that means)... My account setting info looks correct to me.

Cheers,
Leland

you should consider producing a slightly frosted theme. it would help to make the top most window more discernible when you have a whole lot of windows open. i think you should also consider making ones in various colors.

Is there any way to make the menu text a darker color, instead of white? I love this theme but if I want to use a white/light colored wallpaper I can't read the stuff in the menu bar at all. :(

starkravinmad... if you're using setalphavalue correctly, discerning the top window isn't a problem. besides setalphavalue, i recommend using "single application mode" (SAM), which keeps you from having too many windows visible at any one time.

shiroi... I sympathize, but having experimented a lot during development, I concluded that white was the color for titlebars and the main menubar that would work best with most background pictures. as i noted in the list of caveats published numerous times for CC, you'll need to use a background picture that doesn't have a lot of white in it, especially at the top of the screen. It's just one of those compromises... you can use light colored backgrounds, just not white ones. Sorry!

Not to bash this theme. It's excellent. And I would be running it all the time, except for the fact that when it's loaded with Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 crashes consistently. I don't know if it's the Adobe Product, or the additional plug-ins that I have to use to get work done, at work.

If it wasn't for that, this would be perfect.

I would be willing to help work out the conflict between the theme and Acrobat. Let me know what I can do to help.

This is very creative!

A warning though - when you upgrade to iTunes 7.3, the licensing dialog box (that runs the first time iTunes is run) is incompatible with this theme and iTunes never launches. The workaround is to use ShapeShifter to restore defaults, launch iTunes, agree to the EULA and then quit iTunes, reset the theme and relaunch iTunes.

It took me a while to figure out which of my prefpanes was the culprit so I hope this saves you from going a little crazy.

Hey, awesome Theme, but in 1.2 you changed the look of the Menubar. And when you apply a dark (let's say black ;)) Wallpaper, the Menubar will just look Black. Before it looked so shiny and that was VERY cool and better than now I think. I prefer the "old" look for the Menubar. If you want i can take a Screenshot to show you what I mean.

One more Question: In the Screenshot here on the site, you can see the Finder Menu-Point. And there is a Picture or the icon of the Finder. At my Menubar there is just the Text "Finder". How did you do that?

Hey, thanks everyone for the very encouraging feedback! At the moment, I'm hard at work on an update to the Crystal Albook icons set for Crystal Clear, and on a new, hopefully better, way to deal with the crystal menubar. Mostly, though, I'm buried in Cocoa/Objective C code trying to figure out how to make Crystal Clear work in Leopard without ShapeShifter. This is a real problem, because (a) ShapeShifter doesn't work in Leopard yet and (b) Apple is abandoning the visual framework themers have relied on for years to modify Aqua. It's a whole new ballgame... potentially a great one, but very tough for us early explorers. (Having no documentation makes it especially challenging.)

d_klinge, the menubar in 1.2 is definitely different than earlier versions. Take a quick read through the Welcome file that comes with the theme... it'll explain what's going on and how to get the crystal menubar up there again.

As for the main menu title for each application (such as "Finder"), I'm using Unsanity's terrific (essential?!) FruitMenu, and one of its many options is to use the application icon there instead of the app name.

Cheers,
Leland

Awesome theme! I had the PhotoPro theme for a while, and didn't think I would like anything better, but Crystal Clear certainly takes the cake. I wonder about three things. First, why is there that wide silvery band on the finder windows? Second, why can't finder utilize SetAlphaValue? Finally, will it ever be possible to have the option of making the sidebar and finder background semi opaque? Thank you.

Hi Vinfern... I haven't posted it here yet, but I personally think the Crystal Albook icon set looks great with this theme! You can get it from <a href="http://www.musingsfrommars.org/mars-downloads/">my downloads page</a> or from my <a href="http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/53771610/">deviantArt site</a>. As soon as I can add the newly required 256-pixel graphics to the set, I'll post it here as well. :-)

Hi,

loving your theme alot, but being annoyed from the workaround for the menu extras, I took the Liger menu enabler out of the Liger Theme from spiderlama. That little background app displays a bright bar behind the menu bar. Inside the Apps resources folder theres a picture file which stores the Graphic viewed behind the menubar. I took that file and replaced it with an essential of your Menubar PSD's. Now the my Menubar looks great (but still a little bit different (it's a little brighter and the edges aren't rounded), but i'm working on it) without copy and paste orgys like before. If you want, I can eMail u the "hacked" menu enabler to show u what i mean ;). NOTE: I DID THIS ONLY FOR MYSELF AND I DIDN'T ASK THE AUTHOR (SPIDERLAMA) FOR PERMISSIONS TO DO THAT!

lol i see that you already did that with the "original" pictures. But that overlay is floating above all other windows so some MoviePlayers like MPlayer don't overlay the Menubar, so the Fullscreenmode is "issued" with the Menubar.

I like the theme, its really great, but the whole thing with all the windows going transparent when I'm not using tends to get on my nerves. It might be because I use a lot of applications. Its probably nicer for people who have larger screens, because I have a 13.3 inch Macbooks screen and it all looks really busy on my school. Otherwise, good work! and for vale_freelock, you installed Crystal Clear perfectly. it did what it was supposed to. If you don't like it, just change to another theme. If you installed the plugin and want to get rid of it, go to Macintosh HD->Library->InputManagers and drag the folder into the trash. It should be gone then.

To zoheb.nensey... yes, you may need to also empty the trash, and you'll have to close and restart any applications that are still displaying transparency. You don't need to log out or restart your Mac, however.

Just wanted to add my kudos to this theme - once I put it on my desktop it was my new favorite and has been on since you released it. I wouldn't change a thing (but that is me).

I just want to thank you for the idea - now all my desktops match my theme, and the best part is that it goes with everything. Sort of like jeans. :D

And thank you VERY much sailboatskipper - if you hadn't posted that I would have never figured out why I couldn't open iTunes. You are a blessing.

The only grat problem I found on running it is the horrible black toolbar which in most cases overlap most of applications..

I like the theme really well but there are some things that don't look very good. The menu bar text is grey which isn't very visible. I made a black version using the "tweak" and it looks pretty good now. also, there is a variation in the menu bar contrast under the menu bar icons on the right compared to the rest of the menu bar. does that make sense? I also hate how there is a reflective area around the search bars (in finder windows ect) it looks cheap.
And what is the point of the white gradient thing going across the back of the finder windows? I would look SO much better without it. other than that and some other Hard-to-read text I love the theme. Great job! If you changed those things I would definitely use it.

A brief update on Crystal Clear...

In case you missed it, I released a new version in early January, which you can read about and download at http://www.musingsfrommars.org That version has an updated ShapeShifter version for Tiger users, and a new, radically different version called CrystalClear Interface, which can be used on either Tiger or Leopard. If on Tiger, you can run CCI along with the ShapeShifter theme.

I'll be putting out an updated version of CrystalClear Interface in the next day or two. This new version will be ONLY for Leopard users... it will not run on Tiger.

As far as uninstalling the software, please refer to the documentation you downloaded along with Crystal Clear 1.2 (the file called Welcome.rftd). I'd attach a copy to this message, but this forum doesn't support attachments. In Crystal Clear 1.2, the component you need to delete is called SetAlphaValue. (Beginning with the version released in 2008, the component is called CrystalClear.)

Please note: This theme requires Unsanity's ShapeShifter software, which as of now does not work with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.x). I have new software in development that does work with Leopard and goes way beyond what the CrystalClear theme can do. However, it's still beta and can slow your system down in certain applications after a period of time. If you want to try it out, visit my website at <a href=" http://www.musingsfrommars.org/mars-downloads/">http://www.musingsfrommars.org/mars-downloads/</a>

The new software is called CrystalClear Interface, and the latest article describing it is at <a href="http://www.musingsfrommars.org/2008/03/crystalclear-interface-update-version-19.html">http://www.musingsfrommars.org/2008/03/crystalclear-interface-update-version-19.html</a>.

A REMINDER FOR USERS WHO MAY NOT HAVE READ THE DOCUMENTATION THAT COMES WITH CRYSTAL CLEAR 1.2:

If you want to uninstall this theme, you first uninstall it like any other ShapeShifter theme. Then, you need to remove the SetAlphaValue component that is installed as part of the theme. SetAlphaValue is installed in your /Library/InputManagers folder. Simple delete the folder there named "SetAlphaValue", and that will complete the uninstallation.
