Illuminous

by Levi- The perfectionist

June 25th, 2007

A guikit concept inspired by the rumoured 'illuminous' theme set for release with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Theme is currently a 'lite' version and lacking an iTunes skin, certain variants, as well as further improvements.

Application skins:

  • Finder (of course)
  • Mail
  • Safari
  • iTunes (coming soon)

Theme Variants:

illuminous Uno

  • 50% transparent menubar.
  • Black transparent menus.
  • Unified windows, opaque (non-transparent).

Menu extras fix:

This is not a theme variant. It's a transparent menubar fix which fixes the background of the menu extra items which look odd.

I downloaded this and the file is .guiKit. o.O it says there's no default application to open it. So... what do I do?

Okay, never mind. I got it to work.
But now there's a transparency problem with the toolbar.
Here's what it looks like:

The rest is fine.

^ problem is easily fixed by using the menu extra fix variant (included in the guikit). Instructions are included in the description of the variant.
scroll down to see them.

If the menu fix gets undone after every logout, that does get a bit annoying, can't you just release an updated version without the problem?

^ No.

There is simply no way to create a theme where the menu extra fix is permanent. Its a limitation of Shapeshifter and/or Mac OSX Tiger.

There is only one other alternative. The theme crystal clear uses a menubar that is 100% transparent.
Menu extras do no appear wonky. But theres no menubar either.

His theme works instead by creating a desktop image that has a 'fake' menubar on the desktop image.

If you want you could do this with my theme. choose a desktop image with a menubar photoshopped onto it, then apply ONLY the menu extra theme variant.

I find tho that the menus dont work so well when u do this however.

If "There is simply no way to create a theme where the menu extra fix is permanent. Its a limitation of Shapeshifter and/or Mac OSX Tiger," then why does Liger work?

Liger works by using 95% (approx) transparency. This is fine, but if you look closely at the menu extras they still show a 'doubled up' background.

Being a perfectionist, I like the menubar fix to look perfect, at the cost of being temporary.

^ If you set menubar transparency to 100% the menus do not work. My fix works, by first applying a 100% transparency (to the menu extras) and then a 50% transparency to the menubar in a two step process you carry out.

Tho if users prefer to have permanently 95% transparent menubars (and menu extras that are still a little dodgy looking) then I will implement this in future themes.

Hi, I've not dowloaded your skin yet. I've first a question... Is it possible to do skinning options while applying yout skin? I mean, I'd like to give my menu bar 50% transparency and give the context menu a transparent grey. But anything else I'd like to leave as they are... Is it possible? Would anyone recommend a better skin for my proposes? Thank you very much...

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem. Whenever I am in another application and try to click file, edit, view, etc. in the toolbar, it sets it to Finder's toolbar. Now, this is extremely annoying, it's almost like my toolbar is part of finder's desktop. Could someone help me?!!!

Its a great theme! I am using Shapeshifter, PanelManager and Illuminous to tone down the eye-burning light of student computers. Its only being tested now on one but so far, great!
Thank you!
