I hope this picture is removed. It is quite inappropriate and insensitive. This is like a Nazi flag.

I think its a creative background, although the Imperial Japanese flag in the upper corner could be found offensive.

This is a total rip off of the Switchfoot "Nothing is Sound" CD cover. Either that, or one heck of a coincidence.

Yea I don't see why people are calling it a ripoff, it's not like its a replica of the cover, its similar. I just see it as fan art...

you guys he used that sun thing, which i have seen alot of different places before. so what. seriously quit being jerks - i think this is one of the best wallpapers i've seen in awhile on this site.

good job man. i love this wallpaper and have it as my current background. very creative indeed. =]

unsurprisingly, my intentions were to approximate the clean and simple look of the cover of that switchfoot album. perhaps i should have given the album some credit, however, it did not seem to be crucial to do so.

i am in no way saying the wallpaper isnt good, as i did download it, i was just stating that it looks all to similar to the switchfoot album

The whole Imperial Flag should be removed because it is very insensitive to those Americans who died fighting in the Pacific. Note to who ever made it, it's on the News especially the BBC where the "land of the rising sun's" Prime Minister is getting flack for their WWII Brothels another downside to why this should be removed.

It's a total rip. Take it down. Plus it's stupid with the little guy running and the tank....lame!

It's creative. The sun could be interpreted as the WWII Japanese flag, but I don't see how that's offensive.

I'm Chinese and personally I think whats history should be kept that way. I don't find the "Land of the Rising Sun" flag inappropriate or offensive. I'm pretty sure if the Axis won the war, the American flag would be banned as well.

Whatever. I find this to be a very nice wallpaper, obviously some don't agree, but each to their own.

Myself, I find it offensive. I guess my study of Japanese war atrocities in China (and elsewhere) gives me a head start on the less educated among us. In my opinion there is no question that the sun symbol is intentional by the artist, and as such I find the whole work lands somewhere between thoroughly bad taste and purposeful nazi propaganda. Both of which are allowed by the right to free speech, and no-one except nazis would have it any other way. How piquant.

I fail to see how studying Japanese war atrocities gives you the right to accuse the artist of this wallpaper of nazi propaganda, especially as the artist admits the look of the piece is in homage to an album cover (by a band who are commonly labelled as a 'Christian Band' as it happens). Don't presume that we are all non-educated plebs as you do yourself no favours.

First, the artist said the similarity with wartime Japanese flag was unintentional. I believe him/her, but that is was unintentional does not mean it was not offensive for some people.

Second, I am not arguing anything similar to that flag is offensive. It is all about the contexts. The imagery and title of this wallpaper make its Nazi implication obvious for some people. In contrast, most people will think the sun in the CD cover "just the sun."

yea..the picture makes me immediately conjure up wartime japanese rising-sun flag(日の丸の旗) and all the inhuman criminals committed by the beasts known as "Imperial Army".

Hey... it's an operating system wallpaper, not a propaganda piece. Cut him some slack. He took two elements and combined them and clearly a connection was made that he admits he didn't intend. If he did intend to make a political statement, he would have backed that up with his words as well. Of course you all have the right to voice your opinion, but a little tolerance and understanding would be the best place to start.

I too should have taken this approach when I made the initial connection to the Switchfoot album art. Rather than start off by saying it's a total rip-off, I should have begun with ASKING, rather than with a blunt accusation. I'm glad Scooch admitted the "inspiration" for his design. It may not have seemed necessary to credit the album art when submitting it, but it really is important... Especially when so many elements were borrowed from it.

"yea..the picture makes me immediately conjure up wartime japanese rising-sun flag(日の丸の旗) and all the inhuman criminals committed by the beasts known as "Imperial Army"."

Hope you do know that the Japanese and Germans weren't the only ones to commit crimes against humanity. Does anyone ever rememeber the Bombing of Dresden? Or how America alienated and threw Japanese-Americans (the majority being American citizens) in Internment Camps and took away their rights? Believe me, if the Allies didn't win the war, our leaders would've been prosecuted as war criminals.

Either way, I personally percieve the intention of the sun to be an homage to album art. Of course, others will percieve it differently, but there isn't any need to bust Scooch's balls over it. Especially when he's clearly stated his intentions.

I love the comment from the guy who thinks his "study of wartime atrocities in China...gives (him) a head start on the less educated among us"...when there's a CHINESE PERSON who posted RIGHT BEFORE HIM and HAS NO PROBLEM WITH IT.

Wow, what a genius.

I like the wallpaper, but I'm not a big fan of the guy, tank, and blurred scenery.

Some people above seem to think that the flag is offensive because it was banned after WW2, and it was banned because Japan lost. But no, it is offensive because what Japan did to other Asian people.

And citing ONE Chinese person who does not have problem with it does not mean much. Believe me, most Chinese people will have problem with it. A few years ago A Chinese celebrity wore a dress with a similar symbol for a magazine shoot, and caused a national outrage.

I'm offended because I don't like trees. Or people running. This is the worst wallpaper ever!!!

Seriously people, get a life. I bet just about every artwork created by any one of you is a ripoff as ideas are rarely ever new, just rehashed.

"There are no new ideas. There are only new ways of making them felt." - Audre Lorde

Great wallpaper, scooch. Just ignore the whinos.

"Believe me, if the Allies didn't win the war, our leaders would've been prosecuted as war criminals."

I agree this picture could be interpreted differently, but it is totally ridiculous to mention them in the same breath because the Axes didn't even deserve such a comparison. It may be difficult for you civilized gentleman to imagine what was happening out there in Europe and Far East. Young killed, men enslaved, women raped... That's why we spent millions of lives fighting this war. What if we lost...? Hell, as a system, democracy would become a history and we today even won't have this chance to discuss this matter anyway.

Before I comment on the art I need to get one thing out of the way... The people who keep citing history in their attack of the work, please stop using the word NAZI in refernce to this piece... It has nothing to do with NAZI propoganda... It really hurts any argument you make when you go and try to act intelligent and then make huge mistakes like that... I am assuming that ya'll were trying to draw on everyone's knowledge pertaining to the now famous NAZI propoganda of WWII.

The Japanese were Imperialists, not NAZIs... the Nazis were German (or other Europeans). The NAZIs (Germany) allied with the Japanese (Imperialists) and allying with NAZIs does not make you a NAZI... When we allied with the Soviets, we did not become Communist did we?..

Now that I got that out of the way... I can see how this piece could be offensive to some people. Having said that, if artists were always worried about not making art that offended people... no art would ever be made... because in almost every case, someone will be offended by any work of art that one can produce.

Great works of art always seem to cause controversy it's what makes good art good art, it inspires communication. Just one mans opinion. (mine)

Furthermore if anyone has seen the movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley" It's about the upstart of both Microsoft, and apple during the late 70's and early 80's. Really interesting but both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs had used the quote "Good artist Borrow ideas from others, while Great artist steal"...Just some food for thought.

i don't normally comment on here, but don't worry but the people say about it being offensive. If people are offended by you being inspired, then they need to look at them self. If people are offended by this looking like a Japanese flag or whatever, they need to look at where they are at in their life. The best stuff is always controversial.

Interesting to me that everyone is quick to condemn for the wallpaper conjuring up memories of the Imperial Japanese Army and WW2. Where people draw Nazis in to it I'm not sure considering the background similarity is to the Rising Sun flag. Sad that so many wish to destroy or ignore anything they don't agree with or like. However as some have pointed out, the axis powers were not the only ones to commit war crimes.

People, do not run from history. He is not posting anything but mere symbolism. If he wanted to put the maltese cross (benign symbol until nazi germany adopted it) or the Swastika, so be it. I imagine most of us are in free societies where the exchange of ideas is open and need not be censored. Don't let the media or political correctness stop the flow of knowledge and ideas because someone MIGHT be offended. If you don't like it, don't look.

I think that many of the comments above that tell their personal views should keep it to themselves. It's art, and art is all about what your personal views, likes and dislikes are. Hate it or love it, but keep it to yourselves ;)

"The whole Imperial Flag should be removed because it is very insensitive to those Americans who died fighting in the Pacific."

It is art and it can be interpreted any way you wish. The fact that some choose to interpret it as the individual above did says more about that viewer than about the image. It could easily have been taken in the exact opposite way. Enough politically correct crap already! I venture to say that almost anything offends somebody these days.

It reminds me of a Kellogg’s cornflake box from quite a few years ago, and I don't remember anyone bitching about that. If you don't like it don't download it and don't go to the page. And if you can't find a life of your own, try living someone else’s, you might find it invigorating.

GIVE ME A BREAK! I personally find WAR offensive. The men who died over there died needless deaths. As are the Japanese who died here. As are the Nazis who died and the Italians and the French who died.

That some of you would get worked up about a resemblance to a flag is retarded.

Do you think attacking the Japanese mainland, for example, on a civilian population, at Hiroshima was acceptable?

Are the american men who were trained and actually had a chance to survive and protect themselves more valuable than the Japanese civilians, many of which just wanted the war to end?

Wars are games when some guy with power loses respect for the lives of the people is supposed to be leading.

I cant believe how stupid people on here are.. Its not a the Nazi flag nor should it be considered offensive. Should Japan also change there current flag too? They used that pattern during the war also.. People like you who think this shit is messed up or wrong get a fucking life.. And dont think for one second that the only the americans who died fighting were the only heroes! All those Japanese that died also died for a cause.. They also sacrificed there lives for there country.. They arent any diffrent, those guys were fathers, brothers and sons too..

unfortunately for those who are so offended, its a sun, it has rays. sorry for illustrating it like everyone else does. war is here. sorry. and if you care so much about such a touchy subject, look into it a little farther, it was a deliberate action to get us into war. the Japanese imperial flag shouldn't be offensive, the American flag should, especially if there were people who died in the name of American justice and freedom, because it was their higher ups who sacrificed American lives for the material pleasure of war. you need to research, though. don't just throw me some lame repetitive rebuttal, look for everything. sorry to the Japanese for our acts against your country that urged you to attack us, making each other enemies. Our past is a dark one, lets shine light.

another note: it's a wallpaper. good god. A really great wallpaper where minimalist makes a great example.
