September 23rd, 2004

This picture was taken when I climbed the Mount Fuji in Japan in the mist of the early morning and encountered this gate in the middle of nowhere...

This "gate" is a spiritual symbol for those of Eastern religion. Just FYI :)

Heh, I encountered this same gate when climbing Fuji, too. Local legend is that these gates tend to "pop up" out of nowhere and disappear just as fast. Though I don't know how much of a "local legend" can be attributed to the more or less metropolitan outskirts of Tokyo that skirt Fuji, and the story was told to me by an old Japanese soldier (who has now passed on) who grew up in a village that used to be situated around the mountain, but was wiped out from firebombing.
