My first thought was "crop, crop, crop, crop." But I tried cropping the image myself to no avail. I think I came to the sad realization that there is no good shot from this vantage point. I know it's easier to criticize than to create, so mark me down if you must.

I personally like this picture a lot. It's a very sharp picture. The relatively blahzey colors draw you to focus and appreciate the details of the landscape. True it does not follow the rule of thirds or any other rule, but it has its own charm.

This picture does have something about it I like, but I can't figure out entirely what that is because as stubulman mentioned the vantage point is not the best. I don't know where to focus, or rather orient myself. Loved "Falls of Clyde" by the way - still in my wallpaper folder.

@graybeam
It does follow the rule of thirds--the leading lines converge to the top left and bottom right thirds of the image. Wonderful photograph but the colors (or the lack thereof) make me wonder if it'd be more effective in black and white.

I love this image. The sense of scale comes across dramatically the more I look at it. I love the colors personally, and the detail and contrast looks like something that could be as close as the ground at my feet, and then becomes an immensity of rocks and vegetation that dominates the landscape surrounding it.

Sorry I couldn't compress more of the view in here but I was already at the limit of my 18-35mm lens. I hope to make the transition to a full frame sensor but that will be some time away as yet. I did compose a panoramic of the scene from seven shots but of course it doesn't scale correctly for widescreen monitors.
I take many of your comments on board here folks and I do appreciate the critique but I don't believe it is necessary to adhere to the rule of thirds precisely.
Having said that I did try various compositions that day and none were 'perfect'. In the end I decided to aim for an interesting one instead. Maybe it didn't quite work. It's just a shame I can't post the panorama. This shot was taken just after sunrise (we travelled there through the night) and possible I go too distracted by the clours and less focused on framing. There's always an next time and I certainly plan on revisiting this stunning part of the Highlands next winter.
