Soft Tread Full of Moab Mud
By markrez
May 12th, 2009
We stopped for a much needed break after rolling through Moab's Steel Bender trail to check out the petroglyphs and got this picture. Using a tripod, I snapped five photos (two overexposed, two underexposed and one at Zero) and combined them all in using Photomatix.

What can I say, a good deal far from the usual pictures, and more the better for it. Man vs Nature, the colour variations are amazing. Please submit more like this, well done indeed, will be looking out for future submissions

I agree with robynfali..and even if you used photomatix, i think that this appear a natural photo, not oversaturated or manipulated..the jeep is very cool and the place seems very wild!

1 more thing: the cool thing of your photo is that you splitted the imagem: the half left side is composed by the nature, and the half right side by the jeep.
And the dirty tires give a cool rally-aspect to the photo.

Thanks for all the positive feedback! I used a Canon PhotoShot SD1100 IS to take the photo. I am using the CHDK firmware which allows RAW photographs, scripting, and so much more on a point and shoot camera. http://chdk.wikia.com

Pretty cool pic indeed and an advertisers dream it would look great on a huge billboard or on a desk top ;)

Well done! Once again, we see its the photographer and not the camera that really matters. Can't wait to see more from you.

It's an impressive shot to be sure, but I know I'm not the only one who would like to see more Moab and less Jeep. I hope you have more photos from this trip!

This wouldn't be a bad advertisement for Jeep ;) I love the wild feeling of the jeep juxtaposed with nature. Well done, I like it!

I really enjoy those pictures about sea and peace or cities, but this one is something different, something wild. I think it is one of the best pictures from all. Great job. Want to see more from you.

While the content isn't something I necessarily want on my desktop, this is a superb photo. This is a textbook example of how HDR SHOULD be used. Not over saturated, no weirdness, everything looks natural but it still brings out the shadows and highlights very well. Awesome job. Keep it up. I'd like to see more of what you can do with that P&S. I finally bought a DSLR last year, but I still use my P&S on occasion. In many ways, it's much more challenging to get a good pic with the P&S.

Wow, nice to see HDR that doesn't ruin the picture. (the ones with dark corners in skies especially)

I also should say that I personally own a Canon PowerShot, A650 IS series, and I love it! Yes, the resolution and lens settings are limited but still far more than you can ever find on one of those little tiny things for $40. Combine with PhotoShop image merging or Windows Live Photo Viewer and you can compensate for res. :)

A glance at stats should provide a clue as to why photos of utility vehicles aren't a focus here. A handful of visitors defend them in comments, but nobody's downloading. Why?

Love the HDR. Would like to learn how to do it. Also, I'm from Moab, but now live in Oregon. Thanks for this one. Please post again.
