Mini Baseball Game

May 16th, 2009

I was at a Mariners game (Seattle, Wa - Safeco Field) and thought I would try out my tilt-shift lens again... not sure I got the miniaturization quite right... but looks pretty cool still.

I love the guy that's the only one standing up and facing away from the the game.

Goodworks, you've got potential, but I think tilt shift miniaturization isn't your forte! Nice shot otherwise, another unique change of pace.

@Dhaman - Yeah, the one guy cracks me up... why are his arms up, you know?

@brizkit - I hear ya. I definitely don't have the hang of it yet, but going to keep trying. I've only had a digital SLR for about 2 months... still learning.

Miniaturization isn't necessarily my cup of tea, but otherwise I think it turned out really well.

That guy is probably getting back to his seat. Some people raise their arms up like that for some reason when they're squeezing by. Anyway, regarding the tilt-shift: I think it would have bee perfect if there were no people in the shot.

I don't know. I wouldn't want any dude walking in front of me with his hands up. It's almost as if he's saying "Look at my junk. You like?". Better yet "Hot dog! Get yer hot dog here!".

This looks really nice. Lovely light levels and I actually like your focus quite a bit, although you appear to be focusing mainly on an empty field. Unfortunately I won't be using this as a wallpaper as your angle is off and, as a composition, this frustrates me slightly. Notice your shot leans to the right - this is demonstrated by the top corners of the photograph where the imaginary line is skewed. This really puts me off, as I'm personally very picky when it comes to symetrical framing. Excellent colours none-the-less.

In Widescreen 1080p, this don't look like a mini baseball game to me...

This is a nice shot and a nice tilt-shift mini attempt, I think you need to shoot from a higher angle to really make the effect work. Try this same kind of shot from a seat in the upper deck/nosebleed seats and I think it'll miniaturize much better.

Mr. Media, well, a day at the old ball park and everything is out of focus except one or two players. What can we take away from this? The subject matter, composition and atmospherics are all there and smartly done, but alas you can't see it plainly. It is as if we are looking through smudged eyeglasses. Special effects are fine if they are special. I guess I don't like blurriness for its own sake. Keep on shooting and I'll on disputing.

@designmerc: Agreed. If I took it from a higher level in the stadium, it would have been more "mini"... @stubulman: Yep, could have been clearer. Once of these days I'll get one that as good as something in the "bathtub" series by Keith Loutit on Vimeo.

I think you did a pretty good job for one of your first attempts! Don't listen to people who tell you that tilt-shift isn't your "forte". Just try boosting the saturation to make it look like everything is painted, which will make the colours pop, and it will look even better (or more minaiture)! Also, try adding more blur to the top and bottom of the image in photoshop using the lens blur tool. Keep up the good work!
