Lovely lighting and beautiful models, but I think it looks a little bare. I'd love to see some more foliage in there. :)

I really don't like it. Its neither nice to look at nor does it in any way deserve to be on here.
my 2 cents.

I actually agree with wooden, def not one of Mohler's better pictures. The river doesn't look natural, looks like a flood, just really bland and boring.

Sorry Mr. Mohler, ...
It saddens me to say , but it is definitely lacking something ...

Looks fine to me. Added to my collection of IFL backgrounds! :)

Not bad, but it looks too fake to me and has too little contrast or is too "faded".

After all your hard work I hate to agree with those proffering negative critiques, but I do. Now, admittedly, I don't like these kinds of works anyway, but - to my taste or not - I don't think this one is on par with your previous submissions. It's certainly better than a lot of stuff out there, but not better than what you've done before.

Mohler's done some really cool stuff (Bergs, Lush, etc), but this looks to me like a screenshot from any PC adventure game. It just feels very bland and extremely manufactured. Mohler, don't become a cliche of yourself! Let's see some more of your creative flare.

Can this site be more aptly named? I was thinking something along the lines of "MohlerLIFT".

Another substandard submission. Make the work yourself, don't get a program to do it (badly) for you.

It's a restful picture and well done. But among the things it's missing are leaves on the ground. When trees are that full of orange, the ground is covered as well. Autumn leaves don't die and turn and fall all at once. It's a gradual process that generally takes weeks. Likewise, so late in the year the grass is seldom so green. One could say the image is fanciful, but the lack of fidelity to nature's rhythms is all the more noticeable because of the realistic style of the illustration. I'd say the artist needs to get out more and observe the world around him more carefully. At the moment his craftsmanship as a digital painter is well ahead of his insight into his subject matter.

I respect people's choice on the loupe, but since the system is in place, I dont remember those -WoW- reactions I used to have...
Posted By: Chris Gin
about 14 years, 8 months ago
@johnz, you raise a good point. With everything appearing on the Loupe, those that do make it to the front page sometimes feel dated already. Perhaps the Loupe should only contain the 'maybe' submissions, and exclude the 'definitely' and 'no way' ones. That way we don't see the really bad ones, and only see the really good ones on front page. The borderline ones get voted in.
Posted By: Richard Mohler
about 14 years, 8 months ago
Is that your way of saying this a really bad one?
Posted By: Chris Gin
about 14 years, 8 months ago
No I was referring to johnz's comment about the Wow factor being lost because you can see everything on the Loupe beforehand. By the time something appears on front page you've already seen it several times (probably).

Mohler, I understand that taking negative criticism is challenging, but your remarks are in seriously bad form.

"Evidently someone liked it otherwise it wouldn't be here..."

I'm guessing that you're close friends with/related to the admin. You've had more submissions approved than just about anyone on this site, and "your" work (Vue's work), collectively, is a joke.

@XHTZK, you don't like these wallpapers, we get it. There's no need to be insulting. For the record, I have a lot of approved submissions here as well, and I can honestly say I'm not close friends with nor related to any of the admins here.

Richard dont be upset because these commenters are not able to understand this kind of art and mood of this picture, i think this is one of your best.

Some of these comments seem to be designed to be deliberately provocative. Richard, do ignore the outright insulting comments, they're just trying to get at you more because you showed some defence earlier. They probably don't even mean it, they're just doing it because they're anti-social.
The bottom line is, they don't need to put it on their desktop if they so choose to. I'd like to see them create something infinitely better in Vue. 3d modelling and renders take a fair bit of talent and skill to create. I've tried many times to get into 3d modelling, and lacked the motivation and time to do it. Props to you.

Mmmh, I can't agree with the overall bad comments. Even though there are things I don't like about this picture, which are first: the flat area behind the hills(it somehow looks, ahm... just not fitting), and 2nd (and worse): the trunk of the front tree, looks like rammed into the earth, so not naturally grown, which disturbes the smooth impression of the picture. But except that, I like the mood this picture creates, the smooth red in combination with the leaves really looks stunning, and I also really like the natural transition from water to grass. So, overall a nice picture!

Ekzotic, you're taking an incestuous path here. I feel like I'm usually on Richard's side, but you're pretending that criticism amounts to ignorance. Please. Most of us are perfectly capable of "understanding" this kind of 3D art. Richard can and has done much better than this, both technically and artistically. Inject your own personal significance into this stream, but I daresay your argument could be applied to just about anything.

While I do think Richard's work goes well beyond stock models, what XHTZK is saying isn't purely provocative. A lot of people here are under the impression that Richard models every leaf by hand. Here's a screenshot of Vue's tree library:

http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/2154/file420111.jpg

And a showcase on Vue's own site to show what is possible:

http://www.e-onsoftware.com/showcase

I know this sounds like a blast, but hear me out. Richard ought to get praise for his simple, interesting approaches -- NOT his modeling prowess. Not that what he does is necessarily easy, but it's tiresome to pretend that this stuff is technical masterwork. And this particular one falls short by all measures, in my opinion. Mohler's other Loupe submissions blow this out of the water!

technical side is not very interesting to me. u know minimal music? like dub techno? simple lush and deep

Wow, this really got a response from the crowed :)

Just wanted to say thanks for your submission, and with all due respect to those offering a technical analysis above me...it works very nicely as a wallpaper (for me anyway).

Thanks!

Thanks for your input everyone & XHTZK I am not related to anyone here or even close friends to anyone here, but I'd like to think that all of them are my friends regardless of whether they choose my walls or not. Sorry you feel that way life must be tough for someone like you..

Richard, ignore XHTZK, he/she is just jealous of your talent. I've been coming to this site for years and Maple Pond is one of the best I've seen anywhere. It's quiet, soothing, perfect. I usually tire of wallpaper after a few days but this one will last for months, I'm sure.

Richard, thanks for sharing buddy, what an arsenal of commentary here! Enough said about this particular submission, I'm always happy to see any artistic impressions on IFL, a shame there are a few who start playing the person instead of the ball. I hope you're not discouraged by all of this, keep up your work.

It's getting to a point where the COMMENT Section should be eliminated from this site ...
Too many professional critics ...

If We don't like what We see , We should just move on to the next Submission. At least the one submitting the wallpaper can relish in the limelight, knowing his/her work was featured on this site.

@debniak - I'm jealous of Mohler's "talent"? You mean, the way he can take pre-made objects and arrange them easily in a scene, then simply hit "render"? I'm quite jealous. I do 3D for a living; I don't make scenes purely from pre-made models.

@ XHTZK: You do this for a living??? Then where is your work on this site? You are not as bad as Burn Baby was but you are still one of the only members who insults artist and their submissions reguarly. If you don't like it say you dont like it and move on. Don't blast the website and come up with some half witted nickname for IFL. Since your a pro and make a living doing this stuff you should have no problem getting a piece of your work on here. So lets see it.

This is an amazing masterpiece and I am deeply saddened by most of the ignorant people that can't even appreciate some decent amount of effort that went into this work. I can truly appreciate it and it looks great to me on my monitor. I just don't understand what is this mob crying about... I wonder if any of you heard of a foggy misty scene??? This is definitely one and it looks phenomenal and executed very well. It does look simple and clean but what is wrong with that? There are some very biased individuals here.

Bummer about the comments Richard Mohler. I hate when people dis stuff they may or may not be able to do. But I personally think your work is AMAZING! Your older wallpapers are even better! I failed to notice YOU did all those crazy awesome wallpapers. So thanks for all 23 of your submissions, and keep up the good work.

I was going to post an opinion, but as this has heated up quite a bit I think I'll refrain. Rather, just a thought about the whole "realism" aspect: I think a lot of the time, an artist creates a picture to portray some sort of thought, idea, or emotion. So, whether it be in this piece or any other out there, remember that a lot of times the creator is aware that, say, the leaves would fall gradually, or the grass would turn a different color, or the water wouldn't appear in such a formation. They don't need to make something photo realistic. In fact, when something gets as close as this is, the point might even be to draw attention TO those things that don't appear in nature. I'm sure there could be many different interpretations of what's being communicated by any change in particular.

Sorry if that is either too "benefit-of-the-doubt" or wishy washy, but I thought I'd add it as some food for thought. Thanks to everyone for the discussion, it really made me consider this piece a lot more.

I don't like artificial landscapes in general, but I do like a lot of your work.
This one is one of them.

While others may disagree, I really like this wallpaper. I may not be that realistic, but the colors are amazing. Making the picture look 100% realistic isn't need to portray a mood or impression. Thanks for sharing.
