Azure Eye

August 6th, 2009

Macro shot of my brother's eye. Many people are fascinated by his iris, so I thought I would photograph it.

Canon 400D, EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro and 430EX - post-processing was done in Photoshop CS4.

I hope you'll like it.

Very crisp, detailed and creative. But I'm not sure about the effects in the eye. I think it'd look nicer if you just kept the natural patterns in there. Nevertheless, a great image. :)

Maybe you could give us an original image so we could compare to this one? But I still like this!

Thanks for sharing! :)

Wait, you say people really like his iris, so how much of that pattern was post process vs. what his iris actually looks like?

It's a really good photo/photoshop job either way and I'm putting it up!

An example of a person who thinks any kind of photograph would make a good wallpaper.

I think the original eye would look something like this...

Well, believe it or not, bit I didn't edit the pattern of the iris (would have been too much work). Of course I spent a lot of time for post-processing (contrast, color, details...) but I left the structure of the iris untouched. You can see the original image here: http://img3.abload.de/img/img_1296jitq.jpg

@ XHTZK: I don't think that any photo would make an excellent wallpaper, but I put this image on my desktop (just for a try) and thought it would look good. So I uploaded it...

Regards from Germany (btw sorry for all the language mistakes I certainly made...)

Thats one crazy looking eye. Nice shot. Creative.

Don't worry about XHTZK. He usually has something negative to say. Him and Burn are on the top of my ignore list when it becomes available on IFL.

Looking at the original photo I am wondering if your brother has any vision problems. Is the other eye like this as well?

When I first saw this, I thought it was a cool picture, but I didn't think it would make a great background for my computer. I was wrong. Although I love the scenery and nature pictures, this one really captures my attention; Even if the Iris was his natural color it would still be intriguing. Excellent in my opinion!

I love this shot! haha. That's the coolest eye ever. Just one thing you could to to improve the shot. Maybe think about cloning out the white spot caused by the flash. :)

An amazing shot. However, I personally am captivated much more by the original image. The fact that the original is completely unedited makes your brother's extremely unique iris pattern very impressive, and the reflection of the tripod in his pupil is just cool. Why not post the original image too?

That is one crazy looking iris. I would never have believed his eye really looked that way if you hadn't posted the original. And I agree with super_special_awesome, the original image is very impressive. Nice work!

I spotted the thumbnail as I scrolled down and thought, "That girl has a beautiful eye." Then I read the description and briefly exchanged an awkward moment with myself.

Great Photoshop work. I too am not sure how much I want my iMac to stare back at me, but the work is excellent and I can see why the staff here chose to include this. I can't for the life of me however understand the requests for an unaltered version of this... seems strange anyone would ask that of an art piece. Thanks for sharing your talent!

I sent the original image to an ophthalmologist and she said this pattern is the result of a membrane not being completely absorbed during development. She didn't think there would be any resulting visual defects. People with less striking manifestations have a some of this membrane around the margin of the pupil.

Thank you all for your comments.

@ franz dibbler: My brother does not have any visual defects except for a slight long-sightedness. But it's really interesting what you're writing about this membrane. Perhaps my brother should consult an ophthalmologist himself...

Thanks Aletheios, I'll bet the ophthalmologists will be surprised. Again, I don't think there are any long-term consequences.

A very nice photo Aletheios! My sister thinks of ordering a pair of contact lenses for her eyes, with your brother's iris...!

Heh, would be cool to mirror a copy of it and use 'em on two screens :) They would maybe be too close together though, but you get the "eyedea". ;)

I think I too prefer the original, and think it would be neat to see in plain greyscale, but this one is nicely done.
