Japanese Tera (Buddhist Temple)

August 21st, 2009

A Buddhist Temple (Tera) in Sarnath, India.

Buddhist temples are the most numerous, famous, and important religious buildings in Japan. The Japanese word for a Buddhist temple is tera (寺?).

Buddhist temples, like any other religious structures, need to be organized in order to best serve their various purposes. The most primary space in any Buddhist temple complex is the sacred space, where images of Buddhas and bodhisattvas are kept, and where important rituals are performed. This area is always separated off from the areas accessible to the lay worshippers, though the distance between the two and the manner of their separation is quite varied. In many temples, there is little more than a wooden railing dividing the sacred space with that of the laypeople, but in many others, there is a significant distance, perhaps a gravelled courtyard, between the two.

Welcome to the forum prateekpk. I love these two submissions. Excellent quality yes, but I love the unique subjects you've chosen and the unique ways in which you've shot them.

@Manas0210

I think he deliberately created the blown out effect in the sky, producing a nice 'spiritual enlightenment' impression.

Yes! finally! Some architecture not from the US, Europe or Japan!

Nice work (love the sky), but believe it or not, as far as Buddhist temples go this one is pretty unremarkable. Especially for a Japanese structure. The equivalent of any US church, really. I'm not a religious person in any shape or form, but even near Sarnath I'd wager you could find more impressive architecture. Just my 2 cents, take it or blast me!

Very unusual (and beautiful) choice of color highlights! Not what I would have expected; works very well.

@Manas : The blown effect is deliberate , thr is a lot of motion blur added into it

@Brizkit:
Haven't really seen a Japanese Temple so really can't say. Yeh there were a few more impressive work of architecture there, havent uploaded them here . However, this is the best example of any Japanese temple in India i've seen till now , this might also be the only in India.

I think its a wonderful image regardless of where it was located. Yes Japanese temples are more ornate but this one in India is just as spiritually inspiring.

Great pic! P.S. The Japanese word for "temple" is "otera". You used the correct kanji, (お寺). Awesome.

P.S. To NetLink: ALL of the fullscreen images can be resized to 1280x1024 with nearly any photo imaging program.

It's a beautifull Pic !
Colors are wonderfull ! I like the way you make it :)

(and you're right, 寺 (tera) is the word for Japanese Temple, but you have to had お before => お寺. お is an honorific preposition ^^)
