Bow Lake, Icefields Parkway

By TME
September 15th, 2009

Bow Lake, not quite yet melted with ice on the surface. Beautiful scene. Stopped by the roadside and scrambled down the slope to get some nice shots. About midday when this was taken. It was still very cold due to the altitude and ice even at midday... SONY A900 + KM 17-35mm + DRO +3 Advanced.

Very nice. I love the clear water in the foreground.

The only slight criticism I have is that the shape of the landscape makes it look like the picture is slightly tilted and I'm one of those people who are incredibly sensitive to wonky picture frames!

The only other problem is that it's only a 1920 resolution! It's too small for my monitor. Waaagh!

Awwww :( I miss Canada.

I was there May thru June and drove the icefields parkway.
Such an amazing place, life changing.

@tony: well, it seems it's really tilted. How could the horizon not be... horizontal otherwise? Nothing any postprocessing application can't correct, of course. The picture is nice.

*yawn*....not much there to look at, though technically hard to fault. just a little too flat. as tall as the rocks may be, they're very dull and monotone. that's when more dramatic lighting could step in to save the day. just not today.

just dont understand why it doesnt say what country or even continent it's from. is 'bow lake' supposed to be some kind of common knowledge? this kind of arrogance would be expected from a yank, but a little canadian should be more considerate.

a very inviting shot. I adjusted the midtone contrast just a bit--your tastes may vary.

Burn Baby, it is very hard to search on internet, isn't it?

Well.. we have had a little vacation from the troll. First paragraph was sufficient, second was his insulting self again. 2 sec. search in google found the area and gps coordinates of the lake. Very hard indeed to find.

The horizon was a little tilted downward to the right... easy fix though. Great picture though, found its way to my desktop folder.

The image isn't tilted, there's just more water on the other side...

Absolutely beautiful. Clean and fresh. Once again the trolling troll is obvious, on one image it critises the artist for not showing the beauty we have around us and now he criticises that beauty. Angry pathetic little man.

Great picture!!! The water line is off by 0.6º from being level. It kinda throws me off.

Beautiful shot.. I like it.. :) Thanks for sharing..

I have no idea why it looks sorta tilted I don't really think it is, the shorelines throw it off.

i guess i'm in the minority here in that i like the imperfections in nature. i just don't see the need in taking a long time setting up to get that one perfect shot. you're not gonna please everyone, so why try.

personally, i love the shot. it's serene, beautiful, calm. a place i'd very much like to visit.

This looks pretty good. I hate to agree, but it is a little flat on the mountains on the right. I'm not saying this as to pick at the photographer's skill since skill wise it looks like this took some effort to capture. I don't know what more you could have done to bring out the depth.

For those who want to edit it, I suggest Paint.net since it's rotation with minimum detail loss wins out pretty well. I did a rotate zoom command (ctrl shift z) which is in the layers menu up top, 0.6 rotation as mentioned above and a zoom of 1.02 (for 1680x1050) reosolution. The zooming is to cover up the blank area after rotating. I guess it could stand 1.02x and a smig up. If you click on the little button for zooming and just use the arrow keys, you can move up by intervals of I'm guessing 0.005 even though it won't show the 1/1000 place value.

I haven't been in this website too long, but burn baby burn, you sure do have a lot of crap to say for some one who hasn't even submitted a photo. Are you scared of people like yourself? They might criticize your photo??

Hello TME. Wonderful place to take a picture, much as there to pick my favorites. Good performace.

On the lake, if it is tilted or not, if there is more water on one side than another, do not think so. I believe it is only the flow of water and the slope of the place is natural, you can not change. This view of the water that drives your eyes to the other side is magnificent.

jmichi, you have a great sense. I think that is the same. Just look at the mountains and compare.

Burn baby burn....why don't you just shut up.You are a legend in your own mind only, and keep your dim witted opinions about "yanks" contained in that small neanderthal head.

What a great picture! Brings back good memories! Keep it up!

I don't think anyone has a right to tell anyone else to shut up - what sort of a world would that be, where we silenced those we did not want to hear?

Burn, I like your criticism, but please always try to be CONSTRUCTIVE.
Everyone else, you've really got no right to tell anyone to shut up, so play nicely and everyone can get along.

Criticism is required, how else can people improve?

Hello thanks for all the comments. I'm not sure if there is a tilt? I guess the tilted effect is due to the ridges along the mountain on the left of the picture. I remembered the picture as it was when I was there with the curious tilt effect due to the textures on the mountain. As for the mountains on the right, they are quite some distance away, not sure what is meant by flat since there are meant to be the background really...

This is my first picture chosen so I really appreciate all the comments. Curious thing is that when I posted this same picture on a local SONY photography forum, no one mentioned the tilt at all... :-)

Sorry, but I have to disagree with "caneveryonepleasebenice." When someone writes a critique just to show off,and verbally humiliate another artist,to say nothing condones that kind of behavior. His comments were deliberately inflammatory and disrespectful to the artist, and to American's. My words were necessary, and I have an obligation and right to forcefully respond to people who enjoy degrading other artist's .

Now this is what the sky SHOULD look like in a photo -- smooth, not gradiented or grainy.
