Lower Falls, Yellowstone

December 14th, 2009

The lower falls at Yellowstone National Park are 308 feet (94 meters) high, or almost twice as high as Niagara. They descend from the 590,000 year old Canyon Rhyolite lava flow and are the largest volume major waterfall in the Rocky Mountains.

I took this photo in August 2009 during my road trip through Montana and Alberta.

Nikon D300, Nikon 50mm f/2.0, Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Did you Photoshop the sunset in? The sky looks pretty high in the sky based on the shadows on the rocks but the sunset looks pretty low down on the horizon on the left.

If not, great picture!! Really cool either way, actually.

:) More edits from Macindows
The sky is from "I'm Home" wallpaper..
I don't wanna comment on the image.. I just know that you need much more than..let's just say imagination & some software to achieve a great composition..

It seems like a really nice place and a great picture, but it looks too fake to my taste too. I'd really like to see the original as well.

Its a nice image but the water looks a bit fishy to me, its so blue and clean. Is the Mediterranean just over the horizon or something? Fishy.

Not your best work. Very fake! sorry...

Looks good to me... a little over-composed. The sky isn't from "I'm Home". Nice to see Macindows back! ;)

Guys what are you talking about?!? This is an excellent photo. It looks hundred times better than the one I took at the same spot.

Good work Macindows!

Your picture does bring out the "yellow stones" at Yellow Stone.

Cool picture. A little fake/animated. I'm guessing this is HDR?

I like the increased saturation, it makes the colors of the rock and river contrast nicely. The glow isn't really doing it for me though - seems to blur things that shouldn't be blurred.

Nice composition overall, I like it.

This isn't a photography site, it's a wallpaper site. Most of the images here have been, to put it lightly, "retouched".

The lighting on this one is a bit over the top, granted, but it's still nice. Give him credit.

peoples expectations of Macindows are very high...so it seems like he gets bitten extra hard in his comments.

This looks great to me.

Although it looks a bit cheesy, I really like the composition and clarity of this one. Very well done! Thanks for sharing!

It's another nice composite but this one is a bit tooooo saturated for a wallpaper. It hurts my eyes a little :)

Thanks guys! I appreciated your comments - especially since there wasn't the usual "Not my cup of tea" drivel. ;-)

I have to admit, the picture is incredibly cheesy! The only thing missing would have been some fake sun beams and some birds flying through them. On the other hand, it was very tricky to make this picture look as remarkable as I remembered it. When I was standing on the viewing platform, I was simply amazed by the view. But later on my computer, the pictures looked pale and flat in comparison.

Therefore, I decided to give this one a little boost by enhancing the vibrancy, contrast and the sky. Sorry, if some of you don't like it that much. As soon as I finish my exams, I should have more time for my favorite hobby and new wallpapers!

You know sometimes I come in here forgetting its a wallpaper site and my over-scrutinizing comment on this shot is evidence of that. Nice work and nothing fishy.

Very impressive as usual! I'll admit the saturation is a bit much for me, but whatever, it still looks great!

Sorry, but as many others have said, this one is a stinker. WAY too over processed. I mean, the edges along the river are actually glowing! Sometimes knowing when to say "stop" is the most important thing. I stood at this very same viewpoint about two months before you came through. The scene is simply so magnificent that it's almost impossible to capture with anywhere near the same level of beauty. If it looked in real life like it does in your picture, I'd be running for a fallout shelter ASAP!

I'll admit that I love the saturation and too much processing on this image (I really hate it in general) just because the stones are shining and sky is perfect just like in a dream.

It isn't the I'm home sky but the 1,000 Feet Above The Alps sky ;-)
But, it's well done...so , good wallpaper :-)

Yeah, I was surprised by how similar the sky is to 1000 Feet Above the Alps (my favorite wallpaper). I don't think it is the same though...

I'm sorry mmm, but it's not from "I'm Home". Put both wallpapers in their own tabs and then switch back and forth over and over comparing the fine details such as the shapes of the clouds and their placements. Then you will quickly see how different they are and that the sky in this shot is the real sky from this photo.

@Tim H. actually the sky is from "1000 Feet Above the Alps" and it's not the "real" sky.

@oregon is correct on this. I wouldn't have seen it if oregon didn't point it out. It's a well done integration.
