Heaven's Gate
By Chris Gin
December 21st, 2009
I took this back in November 2008 and it's still one of my favorite shots. This is a sunset at Auckland's Muriwai beach, a beautiful but rugged beach and a popular spot for local photographers.
Canon 40D, Sigma 10-20, Hitech GND filters, Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Lovely shot. I very much like the title you gave it. Titles sometimes really help give identity to a shot. Heaven's Gate does that in a very good way.

Thanks guys. The person on the left is a fellow photographer. I tried cloning him out but I couldn't make it look natural so I left him in.
@lerch84, the water flowing here is just a gap between the rocks. It stops just off to the bottom right of the shot where there are more rocks.

Usually I don't, but I kinda like the people in this one. Makes it feel real and as if I'm really there.

Oh Chris this didn't win the Bing "Home sweet Homepage" comp...
Not a fan of this photo, it's just too samey.

"The person on the left is a fellow photographer." I didn't even notice him. HIs presence doesn't detract a bit.

Perfect positioning! The sun coming down over the middle of the river, and just the position of the entire shot just goes to show (once again) how talented Chris is with photography. Bravo sir.

Sorry for the double post but I just have to add; I actually think the people in the photo actually adds to the overall shot. It puts the distance of the photographer into perspective, as well as the actual terrain. Also it gives it an almost "lonesome" vibe and some other vibe I cant quite put my finger on. Again, great photo!

Very nice shot, but yes.. the people take away from it IMO.
I took 10 seconds to remove them all, here is a 1080P with them removed if anyone wants it.

@trout, stubulman, ew1029, thanks, glad you like it as is, though I knew others wouldn't.
@littleg, nice clone job, I suck at cloning out anything except dust spots! Hopefully those who don't like the people in it will be satisfied with your version.

I also think that the small group of people adds to this shot. It makes it kind of interesting.
However I think that the fellow photographer, wich I didnt see at first glance, doesnt belong in this picture.
Nice work.

I voted for this....didn't see the people! Excellent as always but personally I would have cloned them out. It's all matter of personal taste :)

On a second look, something seems a little strange in the top left edge of the hill. Was this a 2 shot composite?

I like everything about it including the people normally I`m not a fan of people but in this case I can see a symbolic metaphor to them and the title name that makes the whole thing fit.

littleg did a great job editing the people out, but I don't find them especially distracting. The people sillouhetted in the far distant actually add to the shot. Too bad about the fellow photographer, but with a place this beautiful and at just the right moment, you can't wait for people to move out of your way!
