Windy Coast
By J.schobre
January 14th, 2010
This is an HDR photo made of 3 exposures from the lighthouse at Seals Rock in the morning at sunrise. This lighthouse has the oldest, still working light unit in the world. The view was very spectacular and dramatic and by combining this into a HDR photo I tried to carryover a small piece of the feeling I had when I took this photo.
Canon EOS 450D, Tokina 12-24, Adobe Photoshop CS4.
32° 26' 27.64"S, 152° 32' 21.31"E

Really like this. Really clean and the colours are so subtly lovely. A bit of ghosting here and there, but that doesn't detract much from the photo for me. :)

Brown-nosing? Actias said that he or she likes it. I don't really think that they will get anything in return for positive comments.
The white color of the lighthouse is amazing.

I can't say I am at all impressed by this. Sorry.
HDR does nothing to improve the composition or feel of the image.
The foreground is badly blurred and catches the eye immediately."a bit of ghosting" ???
The lighthouse is listing oddly to one side. Is it like that ?
Nothing in this appeals to me and I can't see why it would be on here.
This is a perfect example of why the Loupe isn't working.

The barrel distortion and ghosting is very noticable. The composition needs some work as well (1/3's). I can see what you were going for here. You can nail this one if you just give it another try.
@ Quatrix: While I agree this shot needs some work, your comments are almost always negative. But you have yet to submit anything on here. Why?

@ Quatrix - I am not 'brown nosing', I genuinely mean what I typed in my comment, I wouldn't have typed that if I didn't mean it.
Is it for you to say what I think? No. I could assume that you are being deliberately antagonistic. But maybe what you typed is just what you think.
Please, just have some courtesy.

I like it! A 1/3 composition might push it further but there is always a chance the photographer decided against it (maybe some distracting elements?).
For the original photographer - plants are always a problem even on non-windy days. The best thing you can do with this is to import your middle-exposed layer and put it behind your final HDR shot. Erase only the parts with noticeable ghosting and then tweak the shadows/highlights so that it looks like the rest of the shot. That will give you sharp plants.

Interesting variation of opinions on this one and how things catch people's eye / interests / taste / etc. differently... Initially I found it quite a 'refreshing' morning coastal shot; quite elegant, mostly sharp, nice image and interesting history. After reading posts and looking again I basically feel the same although certainly not a 'prize winner', but do like it ;-T

It's quite a pretty picture, nice light colours, BUT, lens distortion needed to be corrected in order to straighten up the lighthouse. And those blurry bushes seem to detract.

I like the picture, but the leaning lighthouse disturbs me. I wish it were straight, or that I wasn't so goshdarn anal-retentive!

The distortion of the lighthouse ruins this picture for me. The image shows both the strengths and weaknesses of HDR. On the one hand, unlike some HDR pictures I've seen, this one strikes a good balance between light and shadow. The lights are not burned in but they are still light enough to capture how the eye sees them; the shadows are not over-lightened, still giving the image an appropriate sense of depth. On the other hand, the effect of the wind on the foliage combined with what is obviously a slow shutter speed caused the multiple exposures to not line up adequately.
But the worst aspect of the image is the distortion of the lighthouse. What sometimes works in landscapes does not work here. Rather than a wide angle lens and HDR, what this scene calls for is a panoramic shot stitched together from multiple exposures. Photoshop CS3 and CS4 can do an excellent job of stitching images together. Shooting in RAW would give you much of the dynamic range you were aiming for with the HDR, without the distracting distortions.
The colors in this scene are luscious and well worth a serious photographic effort. I suggest you return to the location with a standard lens and a tripod and try again.

Overall nice image!
I agree that the white on the lighthouse is superb! The sky is great, water AMAZING! The foliage is definitely a little blurred here and there, which I don't' really like, but Aberration told a great way to get around that. All-in-all I rather like it.
Question for you: How do you like Tokina 12-24 f/4 ? I've heard great reviews of it, and I'm currently trying to decide which super wide-angle to purchase. I've used the Canon EF-S 10-22 (see my submissions) and hear the Sigma is nice... the Tamron okay etc... you like your Tokina? :)

Thanks for the comments everyone.
about the blurry foliage. It was 7 AM in the morning in Australia in winter. So it was still pretty dark. So the exposure time on the darkest image was 1/3 second and the brightest 1 second. Even the darkest image has blurry foliage, so this is not a HDR problem.
About the distortion. I somewhat agree, but can't fix it in photoshop without looking ugly. It was the only lens i had at that moment and i would wish i had used a different lens....

Overall, good. Try with a different lens, but I still like it. It's hard to get HDRs sharp when you're dealing with plants. Try the 1/3 rule, but I think it's still a good, solid shot. :D
