Endeavour's Launch

February 17th, 2010

An exhaust cloud engulfs Launch Pad 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida as space shuttle Endeavour lifts off into the night sky.

Launch of the STS-130 mission to the International Space Station was at 4:14 a.m. EST. This was the second launch attempt for space shuttle Endeavour's STS-130 crew and the final scheduled space shuttle night launch. The first attempt on February 7, 2010 was scrubbed due to unfavorable weather.

The primary payload for the STS-130 mission to the International Space Station is the Tranquility node, a pressurized module that will provide additional room for crew members and many of the station's life support and environmental control systems. Attached to one end of Tranquility is a cupola, a unique work area with six windows on its sides and one on top. The cupola resembles a circular bay window and will provide a vastly improved view of the station's exterior. The multi-directional view will allow the crew to monitor spacewalks and docking operations, as well as provide a spectacular view of Earth and other celestial objects. The module was built in Turin, Italy, by Thales Alenia Space for the European Space Agency.

Nicely cropped, but I doubt the poster actually took this picture.

Whoever did deserves our thanks, though. Incredible shot!

He's credited the original photographer in the description. I wish people would read that more often.

Great job with the shot though. If something manages to top this as my wallpaper, it'd have to be really really stunning.

Yorkie X, the end of the description says this:

"Photo credit: NASA/Sandra Joseph and Kevin 'Connell."

This isn't Bruno Casarini's shot. He's just sharing this with us.

This is an amazing shot. You could stare at this for days and appreciate everything about this from technical proficiency to the incredible human accomplishment that is space travel.

One benign and totally unassuming question, though - I wasn't aware that we were "allowed" to submit non-originals to IFL. Of course, this isn't written anywhere (that I could find) but I had always assumed this to be so? I mean, the vast amount of just space-related photographs that are unbelievably spectacular would give IFL fodder for the next ten years...

I'm just curious. Don't look too deeply into this and shoot back that I am trying to be bureaucratic or nit-picky...:)

I agree with firefly.serenity about ( You could stare at this for days and appreciate everything about this from technical proficiency to the incredible human accomplishment that is space travel. ) It's seriously mind boggling... Thanks for sharing this image.

@firefly.serenity:

It is indeed against the rules: You have to check a box that says:

"By submitting this form I certify that the content of this submission is entirely my own work and that it does NOT contain ANY copyrighted or trademarked material from other persons and/or organizations."

I have never seen anything like this - the angle is just so amazing!
Posted By: firefly.serenity
about 14 years, 1 month ago
@paul.charles.k: Yeah, I saw that too. This NASA image is not protected by copyright, but that whole "...this submission is entirely my own work..." statement kind of throws a wrench into things. I would hate to discourage people from submitting awesome prints, but if this sort of thing is allowed, I will begin to submit my entire Magritte collection - they make phenomenal computer wallpapers.

@knaim2: This is an NASA-sanctioned photograph, as has been stated many times in the comment stream.

Obviously this submission has been approved by IFL. As far as I know all submissions are screened. So does this mean the flood gates have been opened for anyone to submit other people's work? As much as this is a great photo I hope that this doesn't become the norm.

As cool as this shot is, I have to agree with those questioning the practice of submitting non-original work. Not only would it take a lot away from the heart and tradition of IFL, I also wonder about the legal implications. This is an ad-driven site, after all -- allowing a submission free-for-all could be a can of worms.

"I will begin to submit my entire Magritte collection - they make phenomenal computer wallpapers"

I can see where people are coming from in opposition, but I would love to see more "art" and such on this sight.

Simply amazing. This picture represents so much more than just a photo.

For those who have not yet took the time to go to kennedy space center to see a launch, live, only two words: DO IT !

I saw the launch of the STS 127 last year, It's simply incredible ...

Great picture !

Perhaps this was allowed because Bruno Casarini said the following at the end of his description:

"Kennedy Media Gallery: KSC-2010-1674

Photo credit: NASA/Sandra Joseph and Kevin 'Connell."

Although, I believe it would have been better to put this at the BEGINNING of the description for those who saw it and said, "whoa, tl;dr".

But more than that, they should have denied this in order to remain consistent with the fact that it says, "By submitting this form I certify that the content of this submission IS ENTIRELY MY OWN WORK... etc."

Nice image.

I think for the sake of consistency, this site should only allow original creations. If they continue to allow sharing images of external sources, there's a danger that this site could become simply a search engine for wall papers. PLEASE KEEP IT FOR ORIGINALS. Perhaps they could create a separate site to provide other links.
