Okaukuejo

March 1st, 2010

Within the boundaries of Etosha Nationalpark in Northern Namibia there are three campsites. The biggest of them beeing "Okaukuejo", located at a big waterhole with the same name. I spent the first night of my recent visit last November sitting at the waterhole, watching different animals drink and interact. But not only the animals but also the scenery of the waterhole itself, changing colors during the sunset was amazing. That's when I took this picture of an elephant and a giraffe drinking right next to each other at the waterhole.

Canon EOS 40D, Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, ISO 800, 1.3 sec., 33mm, f/4. Post-processing in Adobe Lightroom 2, finishing touches in Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Very nice pic..wildlife is always fascinating..but where does that yellow light come from? it looks like a lighthouse!

I was there myself end of 08. The picture is taken at night, the yellow light comes from massive floodlights that illuminate the waterhole all night long.
Pictures I took look the same (concerning the colors), eventually I switched to black/white. But my camera was (is) far inferior to the one that took this shot... mine are too noisy for use as wallpaper.

But this shot... wonderful!

wow - I didn't expect to find this one voted to the main page.
As with the wallpaper from the sunrise on dune45, i apologize for the noise. I know it's not perfect.
As yodo said, the yellow light is from floodlights, illuminating the scenery. Hope you all like it despite the technical issues...
I got some other shots from that night there but didn't submit them. Earlier that night, the sky was really orange and we had a beautiful sunset. However I liked that shot most, taken after the sun was gone and with both the elephant and the giraffe drinking next to each other.
Again - thx for your comments!

@303: As yodo explained, the yellow light is coming from a big floodlight, illuminating the whole scene, so people can still watch the wildlife at night.

yes it looks like that. sorry didnt see the comment first. maybe changing the color of the yellow light in ps would make it look even better. can you upload the other pic you talked about?

I might try shifting the whitebalance more to blue in order to take the yellow out of the light. However I like this shot with the yellow light. Ah and I'll look over the other photos again. Might add some of the to the loupe...
