Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)

September 3rd, 2010

Preikestolen is a massive cliff 604 meters (1982 feet) above Lysefjorden, Norway. It takes you roughly two hours to hike the trail to the top, passing a couple of nice ascents and many, many tourists. And you better cross your fingers that it doesn't start raining from one minute to the other!

Nikon D700, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, ISO 50, 7-frames HDR, Adobe Photoshop CS4.

The HDR is not overdone, which is great! Shadow detail is great and highlights are not blown, perfect. Very nice colors/tone.

Usually you have a great composition-sense but this one seems like it wasn't completely thought out. With the out jutting rock in the foreground on the right, you lose the sense of separation between this side of the water and the other because it spatially overlaps with the other side in the image. I think that it is important for this picture to create that separation considering you were on a cliff.

Have to disagree with Paul. I think the jutting rock is the most interesting part of this image. I can just imagine some heroic figure stepping out on that ledge with arms outstretched to call up a few sea monsters.

I can't find any flaws significant enough to point out. Nice work.

I like the rock jutting out by it should be recomposed so that it does not bridge the spatial gap to the other side.

Other than that, it is a great picture. I really like the tone of the image and the scene.

I like the color of the water a lot. And the shoreline on the other side.

What are those pink dots? I can spot three of them towards the bottom and right of the picture.

Thanks for your comments! The pink spots are markers so that you find the correct trail up or down. One wrong step and you can count yourself to one of those people who try to base jump without a parachute.

@Paul: That's not possible, unfortunately. I was already on the edge of the cliff. You can take a helicopter though...
