Nice picture, technically very good, tricky lighting condition resolved well. I have visited that Cathedral and it is a very interesting subject.
The concept is absolutely not apt for a background in my opinion. The picture per se doesn't need "improving", just a place where it fits better.

@K, I'm surprised that you didn't mention the fact that a smart blur filter (or something close to it) was used here, and although it gets rid of the noise, it makes the piece lose a lot of detail. I don't agree that this wouldn't work for a desktop. You're saying that old architecture is "absolutely not apt for a background"? Um... ok. Anyways, on my desktop I keep only 2-4 icons on both the right side and left side of my screen. This photo fits my desktop better than almost any other as far as the layout is concerned. My only gripe is with the magnitude of whatever filter was used to alleviate the noise in the original.
