Jellyfish Invasion

January 10th, 2011

This photo was taken at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland. The color of the jellyfish contrasted nicely with the blue background of their tank.

The color combination in this shot is incredibly beautiful, the subject fascinating, and the technical execution is very good. Usually these aquarium shots are blurry, noisy, and have washed-out colors. Great job with the post-processing.

This is my favorite out of the ones that made it to your IFL Portfolio. I love orange and blue together I always have, they are probably my favorite complimentary colors. Are we seeing the true color of the jellyfish for the most part?

I agree with Se7en, usually aquarium shots come out pretty gross. This is beautiful though. I love the depth of field. It's been to long since I got out to the Baltimore Aquarium.

Thank you all for the positive feedback. Luckily this little guy's tank was brightly lit, allowing me to use a low ISO and avoid noise. Still, I was surprised by how well it came out.

Daddy Gemini, the colors are modified slightly, but for the most part, they are true to the original. I pushed the yellow channel a bit in the direction of red and boosted the saturation of the red channel. I also decreased the saturation and luminance of the blue channel, to make the jellyfish pop more. I'd be happy to share the original if you'd like a copy, or if you know of a good image sharing site, I could post it there.
