Perfect Winter Landscape
By m1cha
February 16th, 2011
I took this picture at the "Hintersee" in Bavaria, Germany. The weather was perfect and it lay a lot of snow (about 60cm).
Nikon D5000, Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6.

Beautiful landscape on a near perfect day. This should have been a perfect mountain scene.
Just the basics. Straighten up the slant and remove the sharpening/clarity that has ruined the mountain ridges.
Otherwise, great effort.

This is a nice refreshing shot, however the outline around the edges of the mountains and the dis-colorization of some of the clouds in the upper-right are two things that are a little distracting. None the less, it's still a keeper so thanks m1cha. Now to see if I can fix those clouds a bit with photoshop. ;)

Beautiful sky and nice surrounding. Wish I was going for a walk here without a care in the world and not sitting in this office right now.
This has to be a composition right? If not, what's that strange contour along the ridge? The water line seems to be leaning too much, is this picture actually straight?

I really like the scene and colors here, however, the execution is lacking for an IFL submission. As others have mentioned, the image is noticeably tilted to the left, there are weird, unnatural colors in the sky near the sun (processing gone bad?), and a lot of the ridge line on both sides of the image are obviously 'off' (sloppy blending of images, sky processing leaking onto the mountain?). Take the time fix these processing issues and you have a winner.

I like the colours and sharpness in the foreground and overall subject..
But a pretty poor shot technically as the others have mentioned. I'm not really a fan of blatant HDR for landscapes, and it always ruins the sky as is apparent here. It does OK for black and whites, but only because you can't see the odd banding and colour casts it creates as easily.
What you should have done here is kept the foreground as is, straightened it as the others have rightly suggested, but use a layer mask on the sky and don't apply any tone mapping to it. You can fiddle with the contrast and curves, but I wouldn't take much further than that, otherwise you run the risk of getting obvious tone-mapping artefacts along the ridge and in the clouds as you see here.
To the moderators of the site: I think this represents one of the more fundamental issues with IFL. People vote on images, but can't or don't bother to see the technical imperfections such as this which are only apparent at high resolutions. These things really ruin it as a wallpaper. I think there should be voting as usual, but with moderator input at the end before getting posted up on the main page. If you look at the guidelines for submitting to some place like National Geographic, they are quite strict on this. And fair enough too, who wants to see such obvious artefacts that take the magic away from such a vista?

Nice scenery and timing. Good effort but there are evident artifacts that somehow ruins the picture, and probably the image is slightly tilted left.
I agree with josephwm about letting these pictures to the main page. I know you can say: "just don't download them" but its for the reputation of the site, not for me.

Obviously more than a few folks enjoyed this image or it would not be here. This isn't National Geographic.

I hope I don't get a lot of hate for what I am about to say but... I really like the photo. I do agree it could have been straightened a bit but the colors (even artificial) are stunning and provide very pleasant visual experience for "me".
I have followed IFL for a while now and just got into real photography in the last few weeks. Snapping away like crazy, looking for interesting subjects, and trying to get the level of quality required to make it to the home page. I am far away from that but I want to know when I do get better I can get advise on how to improve without someone telling me my photo shouldn't be there at all.

so first of all, thanks for all comments on this picture. I know that there are some parts in the picture which are far away from being perfect. But for my defence: I have my DSLR since one year and this was my first HDR which becomes pretty. I am thankful for all criticism, because only by your comments I have a chance to learn by pro's and can improve my photos.
I know that this is not National Geopraphic, but this is HDR. It is an aim to look a little bit unnatural und colorful. I made a lot of "normal" pictures of landscapes, but I am not happy 100% with any picture (mainly because I see many perfect pictures on this side and compare them with my).
But I hope I will upload some pictures, which please to everbody in this community, in the future, when I learned more techniques in photography.

Very fine camera of course as it's the same as mine. Very fine wide angle of sigma too and even though the colors are empowered, the captured scene has been done well by the lens and also good job of the photographer. hail to you.
Keep on the good job and as we know the mountains are complete which leaves no room for improvements.
