Glass Ball...
By Kymo
July 7th, 2011
In Kyoto, Japan, I was touring some of the temples and came across this glass ball - I got a friend to hold it up for me and took a shot - hope you guys like it!
Canon EOS 7D, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM, Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Lightroom.

I agree with Brad. Cool artsy shot, but without any hint of pretension or force.
I wonder what it would look like to have the ball closer to the camera? Or the ball placed on a surface, or even hanging by something?
No critiques from me, just lots of questions!

The perfection of the glass ball is very nice with the background image reflection.
The holding hand is so out of focus it is a distraction. I would rather see the ball on a solid object like a fence post or a black cloth etc.

Hmm... Very interesting idea. I wonder if you could find a more natural place to do this like a stream in a forest or something. I like it overall though it's cool, thanks Kymo.
Too much of the frame is blurry but it works. You could take one closer to the ball like nbocch suggested, or maybe you could take two separate shots, one focusing on the background and the other focusing on the ball, then combine them. I like the hand idea but I would like to see one where the ball is on the ground or somewhere else stationary.

Thanks guys for the nice words :)
I agree with everything here - I wanted to do so much more but the guy that owned the stand took the ball back pretty quickly after that first photo...I'm definitely going to look for another one around here and probably put something together from a bunch of different environments and without a large distracting hand!

I'm not a professional photographer, so take my comments for what they are worth. I think this photo is incredible. Somehow, it captures a kind of hope for me. I disagree completely with Gemini because I think the blur adds to the density of the photo. Almost like, there's a way to see through all of the blur that life brings. Great shot.

It might be interesting to see you do the same picture with varying backgrounds and in differnet locations. You could do a whole series with that little glass ball!
