Canyon Sunset

August 30th, 2011

Sunset at Blodgett Canyon from an overlook in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana, United States. I got there just in time to capture this 6-image HDRI.

Panasonic LUMIX G1, Panasonic LUMIX G VARIO 14-45mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH, Photomatix Pro, Adobe Lightroom.

The coloring makes it look like an old painting. Very nice, very nice indeed.

Is the ~30 degree tilt supposed to be artistic? Unusable because of it. Feel sea sick looking at it.

Beautiful Location would love to know the coordinates.

The OCD in me hates how slanted the horizon is in your image.

I like it. It would have worked better with no clouds in the sky. I like it though because it is sharp and it feels like the mountains are moving. This movement makes imagine a tsunami wave made of earth. The colors are also well done. I would also like to see a straight version but I'm sure I'm not the only who is feeling the artistic nature of this piece. Although like I said, the clouds kind of automatically throw it off even though the balance of the composition works.

Very nice colors, detail. The sepia makes it feel "classic" without losing any sharpness.

I *really really really* (!!) :) wish that people wouldn't produce dual-screen shots by just slicing off the top, bottom or both. In this case, the dual-screen shot is completely pointless because it only contains the least-interesting piece of the image. I would love to see a true dual-screen version of this image.

Hey GalacticCowboy, I feel your pain about the dual-screen shots. Unfortunately, this is done automatically by InterfaceLift unless I upload a custom version for that purpose (I think!) - I will look into doing this if I am able, because I've had the same issue many times before. Thanks for the feedback! And procerus, glad the tilt works for you!

Thanks, Jacob. I really liked this picture, so I hope you can figure out what's doing the crop.

InterClaw and buck, thanks so much for the feedback. Buck, the coords are somewhere around here: 46.264273, -114.243786 (If you pull that up you'll see Canyon Creek road to the south. That road dead ends at a trail head, one of which heads north around that mountain and then the view I captured would be looking down the canyon to the north (Blodgett canyon, you can see Blodgett Camp Rd from that point as well. It's generally known as the Blodgett Canyon overlook and that might actually be the trail name. Hopefully that helps!

Yeah, I was going for an artistic angle and realized that it wouldn't sit right with everyone. When I'm back near my desktop I'll work on a more level version of this. I did a few HDRs of the same scene, two of which are not at this angle. I'll upload them when I get that done (traveling right now so it might take a week or two unfortunately.)

I like the tilt. It makes me think of an alien planet with some sort of curved canyon. Nice job!
