Purple Murmur

October 20th, 2011

The Indian summer of 2011 in Charlotte afforded us a perfect Sunday at Freedom Park. These beautiful bright purple bushes look surreal as they softly sway in the slightest breeze - I had to capture them.

Canon EOS 600D, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, Adobe Photoshop CS5.

This seems to be one of those photos that you just need to be there to see what the artist was trying to capture.

First thing I see is a blurry mess with very little in focus to keep my attention at all for a wallpaper. It is just too distracting to me.

On another note I hate how this site has gone downhill with the simple click of a button for those addicted to tweet and facebook. There used to be a dozen replies to the photographer for each submission, now you are lucky to see one or two. How is this helpful to the artist?

Actually, I see a lot of in focus areas. I see some really nice bokeh and graduated color from purple to green.
Nice shot

I really like this photo! First, the purple and green colors are so cheerful, yet the plants and the blurriness make it really soft, calming, and cozy. You don't really have to look anywhere...it's more about the feeling of the texture that you imagine. Since I'm familiar with these "cotton" types of plant seeds and grasses, it brings nice memories!

Not sure what Gambit is on about. I think the latest few submissions on this site have been truly excellent for the desktop. Some very creative, vibrant, simple, and interestingly composed shots here.

The haze in this one is pleasantly dream-like and mesmerizing. Love the colors.

Keep it up!

I also was worried for awhile with some of the submissions making the cut, but more and more we're finding great pieces are now up for download. IFL doesn't have to post this if it isn't true, but I feel that the voting now is not as important and not the end-all final determining factor of what's chosen for download like it was for awhile after the loupe was established. I think a lot of the decisions of what gets picked is now more like, "okay let's look at what got the most votes, but WE get the final say.", which to me should be what they do because let's face it, IFL admins are pretty good at recognizing interesting, or quality artwork.

A lot of times I vote for something just to see it big or find out more about the location, and even then I find myself not actually keeping the image after seeing it full-size. It's hard to tell how good the quality is sometimes by the slightly larger thumbnail we get and then a little crop of the center at original resolution, which on many occasions doesn't give enough to go on for determining quality. If only the slightly larger thumbnail size was... slightly larger (like 1.5-2x the current size), or when it finally loads up the zoomed in crop you could move your mouse around and see more than just the center of the image.

Just some ideas IFL, your site is still me favorite for quality photos and imagery AND I love the loupe downloads ability for members, Just not sure if we should even be voting because you are already so good at picking and choosing yourselves. Don't post this if you don't want, but this comment's page is already a month old so it probably won't hurt... and you might get a couple other people's thoughts/feedback on the matter. And I'm not saying something should DEFINITELY be changed about the voting and/or the loupe, all I'm saying is maybe a change or two would help US pick the best images better, thus helping YOU by slimming down the list of most voted submissions. Haha I talk too much... =P

Hi, I'm actually the photographer. I just wanted to clarify some things. I'm not sure of the plant name, but here is a picture to show you what they look like from about 10' away: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m7prdwo2jde5wot/purplebushes.jpg

As you can see the grassy parts of the bush are VERY fine so it may not be immediately noticeable, but there are a few areas that are in focus if you look. I was conscious of this when taking the shot and felt this was the best of many due to its focus, color, and composition.

I actually thought this would be a good submission for a background specifically because it was NOT distracting. I guess this is a personal preference, but I prefer backgrounds that aren't too bright or of high contrast and are generally just pleasant to look at. I felt that the overall impression of this photo was summed up nicely by brizkit, Mark, and glacierkn: "soft, calming, and cozy" and "pleasantly dream-like and mesmerizing".

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I hope this gets through so more people can enjoy it.

Please email/message me with any questions.

Cheers,
-CJ
