Lake at Night

December 12th, 2011

A high shutter-speed image of Lake Ontario, Toronto. It was taken while half buried in the sand with a freezing wind chill blowing past.

Canon EOS 5D, Sigma 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM.

This is just gorgeous. The color grabbed me before I got the whole image loaded and it took me all of 4 seconds to decide this was my desktop. I LOVE it! Thanks for braving the cold!

Just wow, incredible shot! I really love this one. Nice colours and effect.
Thanks for my new desktop! :-)

I decided the upper part might just need a little something, so I added the sky from here http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper/details/2780/foggy_valley_with_milky_way.html with a layer mask and gradient and changed layer style.
The result just suits me fine, but I like the original as well. :)

I didn't even see this to vote for it - this must have been one of those "we're having it right this second" photos. And too darn right... It's brilliant. Love it to bits, and it's already my desktop. I expect to be visiting Toronto in the New Year, so I'll have to try and see if I can duplicate the shot myself! I'll remember to wrap up warm!

Great shot, nice, crisp water. Calming scene. Nice execution.

... but it also includes my biggest peeve, which is noisy or banded skies. The banding in the sky area is noticeable, and once I notice, it keeps bugging me.

The clarity in the waves is amazing. Crisp and cool, angry yet calm. Been looking for this mood for awhile! Thanks.

Although I am a fan for artistic touches, I am not sure I like the blurred foreground.

This is fabulous! I wonder if you had a full moon lighting up the scene, because this is phenomenal. Any tone mapping?

Perhaps less sand would have made it even better. But that's just me being nitpicky :)

this is disturbing in its quality; and yes, you must have some good lighting for this

I tried to simply say "Perfect." as a comment but apparently that is not descriptive enough. Maybe this will work though.

Wonderful image. Our hometown but my wife and I have lived in Australia for the last 30 years. So it's our new desktop with loads of nostalgia and just in time for Christmas when we miss our family. Can almost feel the cold!

Thank you.

Great Wallpaper! I love the Water you can almost feel it!

@Mohsen.K
The shutter speed (around 1/500) you need to achieve the frozen water as in this photo, makes it impossible to shoot at night. Even at full moon!
So i suppose the photo was taken in the daytime and then post-procesed to get this night-time look.
For example the heaven looks like it was replaced.
But even though the photo is still stunnig!

Incredible and intense... love the color and focus, this is fantastic!

@Anak: You're right, now that I think of it, this is kind of impossible to achieve at night. The title does say lake at "night" though.

I love the shot. You made an ugly lake like Ontario beautiful. Fantastic!

Wow, amazing picture! Did you do any post-processing?

Thanks for the compliments everyone. I had no idea that this photo would be received so well! It was indeed taken during daytime and post-processed as day-for-night. There isn't any photoshop fakery aside from fixing some artifacting in the sky. I shot this photo with a used Canon 5D classic that I bought off craigslist (originally circa 2005), and you can tell that it still holds up nicely.

What a shot! Instantly my wallpaper. Is that sand or water on the bottom quarter?

I've been obsessively searching for an ocean wallpaper as good as this one for a long time, finally I've found it!
What a picture this is, simply perfect, flawless.
The only other photo that comes close in my eyes is by Antony Nagelmann, used on the album cover for Audioslave's 'Out of exile' album.
Well done indeed, finally, I can stop trawling wallpaper sites, thank you so much agent42b.

I come to interfaceLIFT all the time to get my wallpapers, but I have never made an account. This picture was so good that I made an account just to say that this is the best wallpaper ever and to add it to my favorites.

I agree this is a fantastic piece. I was wondering how you captured the waves so crisply at night and I thought you brought a big light out with you on an evening with a full moon, but the day time explanation makes more sense.

@fjawodfc - I see slight banding as well but I've seen much worse and I don't find it distracting at all. As for any noise (grain) in skies, it bugs everyone, especially photographers as it's ALMOST ALWAYS THERE, no matter what camera you have. That's why many select the sky and edit it with it's own noise reduction separate from the rest of the image.

Anyways, I also love the sand in the bottom and it is just the right amount on the 1080p crop. And whoever said the sand was blurred for artistic look doesn't understand that in one exposure you can't have something that close to the camera as sharp as those amazing waves came out without stitching two exposures. Thanks agent42b this is a keeper! =)
