This is a shot of one of three white tigers living at my local zoo here in Singapore. They were in the news in November 2008 after they killed a deranged man who jumped into their enclosure. This is a picture of one of the two females. I've visited several times in the past few weeks and she is usually lounging around whenever I stop by-- letting the male pace around and keep watch for intruders. This time, however, she caught sight of me, started growling, and made me quite happy that there was a moat separating us.

Oregon's Painted Hills

March 16th, 2010
This image was taken on a hiking trip in February of 2010, in the Painted Hills Unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. I had just gotten a new camera so on my way back from Central Oregon I stopped to hike some of the trails and take some pictures. It was a nice and clear sunny day, and not too cold - perfect for hiking that area. I took this at the first parking area and trail.
The gray layers are mudstone, siltstone, and shale formed from sediments deposited on an ancient river floodplain. The black layers are manganese nodules or manganese stains. The red layers are ancient soil profiles (laterites) that formed on floodplain deposits. Surface weathering relatively quickly breaks down these rocks into a clay-rich surface coating that easily erodes during summer flashfloods and/or winter storms.

Tiled Roof on Blue
November 1st, 2011
I took this photo in Faro, Algarve, Portugal and was impressed with the way the paint used in this house mimicks so closely the intense colour of the sky. No polarizer or other filters were used.

An Emerald Princess

This feather was next to a wondow in my mothers house. It was lit by early morning sun making it glow this wonderful green and blue. I wanted to take something with me when I left that reminded me of my mom. This is what I took.

Morning Heart

Seeing the first light of a wonderful day reflected in a heart-shaped pond makes for a pretty good start. The picture was taken at Milford Sound, Fjordlands, New Zealand, on a chilly autumn morning. For a place that gets roughly 360 rainy days a year, I turned out to be pretty lucky!

Just the Right Amount of Color
May 8th, 2012
Taken at Aci Trezza, a town in Sicily, southern Italy. Located on the coast of the Ionian Sea, this village has a long history of maritime activity. Aci Trezza is a popular spot for Italian vacationers during the Summer.
Off the coast of Aci Trezza are three tall, column-shaped islands. According to local legend, these great stones are the ones thrown at Odysseus in The Odyssey. Not far from the coast (about 400m) is the "Island Lachea", identified as the Homeric "island of goats". Today it houses the University of Catania's biology station.
