Ambury Sunset
By Chris Gin
November 2nd, 2008
Taken at Ambury Park, Auckland. This is a working farm open to the public, and one of the animals decided to be part of this shot.

Thank you for submitting this one, Chris! I really like it, and I have added it to Wallpaper Master. I especially like the fact that this one has a sheep in it. Nice shot!

I guess the reason similar wallpapers are being posted is because nobody is submitting anything else. C'mon people if you want more variety maybe it's time to contribute!

posting so much of the same stuff somewhat cheapens the whole bunch. but i still like it, most of your pix have very little to dislike about them. they're pleasant to look at, technically they're of excellent quality, they make a great wallpaper. maybe just ease up on the sunset in a puddle theme, and point your talent in a slightly different direction. the spaghetti junction is my favorite.

I would love to contribute..but the problems is that i have no idea of making this beautiful picture. I'm just a normal person that has no idea the difference on between cameras .like nexon 2000 or hd-camera 10000 or the the cameras you could buy in wall-mart..something like that.
So can i just buy a expensive camera and start taking picture of stuff and see which is the best one and send it to IFL or send all of them to see which one get choose?
It's most likely it's way more complicated than that..so pls correct me. _:{.^_^.}:_

This is phenomenal work Chris! Love the composition, clarity and dynamic range. That sheep on the right is such a bonus and I love it :) Amazing work buddy! keep them coming. Some people are just not grateful at all.

Beautiful work (as always). You should work for the New Zealand tourism board, every time I see your wallpapers I want to go there.

From looking at the thumbnail I though "oh great, another sunset," but this is fantastic. The sheep on the right is a nice touch and water looks nice. The only criticism I have is, like It Burns said, you should think about not using the sunset over water idea so much. All your pics are great and all, but they get monotonous and all run together after a while. There is no doubt you have talent and if you would find a new medium to photograph you portfolio would be so much more impressive.

I'm all for sunsets, and I don't mind them at all, but to be bluntly honest Chris - and I'm sorry to be just a critic here without being an artist - I think the main problem amongst your sunset pics is that they're all a similar color. It's almost as if someone took the same sky and pasted it on top of a different 'ground' each time...
But I love them. ... -_-;

Trust me, I would love to find completely different scenes with different colored skies, but I just capture what nature gives me. Remember, I've only been doing this for a year so these photos are all taken locally. I will try and do some travel next year and hopefully get some completely different shots though.

I disagree with Lencias, its not that the sunsets are all the same color, its that the horizon is in the exact same spot in all but one of the sunset pics. Now, I'm not dissing your talent Chris because you are obviously a great photographer, but maybe work more with macro. The flower pic you have is a nice change from the normal, so maybe do more of those. Great job though.

Also don't forget that what you see here is just what the IFL admins approve. I have submitted non-sunset photos that haven't been accepted. You can see my other photos on my Flickr page (http://www.flickr.com/photos/chris_gin/) and if you want any as wallpapers then contact me and I'll see what I can do.

Nice profile on flickr. What kinda gear do you use? As in, camera, lenses, tripod, flash, all that good stuff.

My gear : Body - Canon 40D, Lenses - Sigma 10-20, Tamron 17-50, Sigma 70-300. I use a cheapo unbranded tripod, and don't have an external flash. I also use graduated ND filters a lot.

I wish. Some of my grad filters give a magenta color cast which I sometimes correct via white balance, but other times leave in.

I wonder why IFL doesn't set up a special membership section where we can see all the new submissions coming in and rate them? Then the ones that get a certain amount of votes are greenlit onto the main site (sort of like Fark articles)? I wouldn't mind ponying up a monthly or annual fee to get total access. Or just give us some non-monetary incentive to join, like anyone who submits a photo or two can be a member? This would effectively demolish the sunset complaints and probably provide a greater variety due to collective moderation. Mm?

P.S. Chris, you're a great photographer, and I love the sheep, but I'd be lying if I didn't agree with others that familiarity breeds contempt. We're just having a sunset OD, that's all!

Not to worry, this one was actually submitted months ago. After my 'Green Delight' one I decided noyo to submit anymore sunsets. Hopefully I can get some different shots, but based on history they won't be accepted... oh well...

Please submit your photo "Shipwrecked" - it's an excellent photo from composition to post processing.
BTW, have you ever thought of selling some of your photos? You've got a pretty good selection of subject matter on your flickr page. Look here for instance to get started http://www.fouroaksonline.co.za/stock.php (p.s. it's not my site!)

For this shot, the sky was a light purple tone due to the thin haze of cloud hanging around and the grad filter made it darker, so that's how it came out of the camera. I did play with the curves during PP to bring out the orange a bit more though.

Clearly no shortage of talent this Chris Gin has to offer and the users comments are mostly very constructive as well. I think I would like to see all of Chris's work displayed on this site he has own style that's got something special to offer. I would like this picture blown up big and put on my wall.

I love this... The sheep looks like it is contemplating the sunset. Your flickr site is very impressive; it was great to see some portrait shots for a different perspective. Some really fantastic work there, Chris. I love birds and flowers (I design gardens) and the shot of the Chaffinch is particularly wonderful. I feed the ones in my garden and this shot shows how gorgeous they are in such fine detail. You obviously don't just do sunsets, as anyone who goes to your flickr site won't be able to deny.

Some great advice to go with a great picture. Another excellent shot Chris. I would recommend that anyone here who is a fan of Chris' contributions to check out his Flickr page. Much more variety there.

Looks like we have a lot of whiners here that will not or not able to contribute but still complaining... It's not like this is a paid website. Give me a break. One of the main reasons I have not submitted anything yet due to all the ungratefulness that is abound on this site. I haven't had a chance to go through my portfolio and pick something to upload here and do all the resizing. There is a lot of work involved in submitting a high quality image here.
Chris... keep posting all these wonderful sunsets buddy. I love every single one of them. Cheers.

Chris, if you're using cheap graduated neutral density filters from Cokin, Tiffen or Lee, you're going to get color casts. The best filters by far, and the only ones not to impart color shifts with their NDs is Singh-Ray. Expensive, but worth every penny if you're serious about your work.

I love the sheep in the picture...too bad the rocks are not them there...I thought at first maybe they are sheep too. Good job. Submit more pictures with animals...hopefully IFL would increase amount of wallpapers posted with farm animals...it's DEFINITELY missing ! A sunset or a sunrise with animals is a great idea.
