I love it! But that's just because I'm a huge fan of Rocky 4... even though their Soviet champ was really a Swede.

Every large country has an incredible amount of blood on its hands. Even making an American flag would represent the death millions of people.
Wake up and smell the roses, or at least relax a little.

Sure, every nation has blood on its hands, but most people associate Soviet emblems not with the country as a whole, but with a regime that killed in excess of 30 million of its own people.
People who lived through such times are still alive. It's a sick joke to put this under "Patriotic."

You've got to be kidding me. The American flag represents freedom. The American government has never engaged in the genocidal killing of it's own people. The USSR was an evil empire.
I'd put a picture of a pile of bullshit on my desktop before I would put that on there.

Different images represent different emotions and ideas for different people. Just because some of you see this in an extremely negative way doesn't mean everyone else will too.
Just as some think the American Flag stands for freedom, justice and patriotism, others thinks it stands for corruption, greed and deceit.
Peronally, I like this image. Unfortunate that it has a controversial icon as its centrepiece, however. That being said, I'd much rather have the Soviet emblem in the middle of this than the American flag.

Just because it might represent a different emotion to someone doesn't mean that it doesn't represent a government that killed its own people by the millions. I'll agree it looks nice in and of itself, but no matter what people say, or feel like it represents. The USSR was evil, and its emblem stands for evil.

Some of you have clearly never been to Russia. Go and witness the massive amounts of support the USSR (or CCCP as it's known as over there) still has. And don't be surprised if they revert back to communism.
That's a communist logo, not a Russian/USSR/CCCP logo, Communism on paper is good, in real life...not so much. Just because Russia's communist government killed millions doesn't mean that Communism as a political system is based on mass exterminations.
Do you see that logo on Russia's flag right now? No. What are they doing? Exterminating millions of Chechnians for attempting to rebel and split away from the country.

heel yeah :) let us start some political debates on here :p
As stated before, different people, different opinions, different interpertations, different emotions... simple as that.
If this is forbidden than let's not start about the american flag. Respected only by the americans themself, thinking everything is allowed as long as we claim it is part of our battle againt terrorisme.
No talkin about human rights then do they?? Let's go the Guantanamo way, Iraq... etc... To me the american flag stands for a nation that wants to rule the world, no matter at what cost. I'd better get sovjet logo on there now :p

no wonder that regime was evil, but this is not a mtter of being communist or being democratic. as a matter of fact, many in this world today think the same for united states... real communsim is good in itself, maybe the best thing you can expect in this world. the black fact is, that exists only on paper.

Ever heard of the Native Americans, or the Cherokee Nation who represented in congress in 1820s when President Jackson over ruled the senate and sent couple of hundred of thousands homeless and forced to walk about 500+miles in the winter just because gold was discovered on their native land.... read your history before making comments. Every nation has a painful past. Get over it, dont be afraid to learn from your past.

Modern Native Americans are proportionally the largest group to enlist in the military and have a tremendous amount of respect for the United States and its flag. Nobody is ignorant of the United States' history, but implying that the U.S. flag is offensive to Native Americans is wholly ignorant.

On paper just about every type of government system works. Hell, even a dictatorship can work if it's lead up by a just ruler. The problem is that it never ends up that way and putting too much power into the hands of any one group (be it government or corporations) will result in the abuse of power and the abuse of the nations people.
The Soviet Union is just one example of that. A more modern one would be China and its many human rights abuses.
I'll admit that Democracy isn't the perfect system and there are many things about it that I hate. But all things considered I would rather die for Democracy then fight for Communism.

Wow, I'm glad to see a simple desktop spark a debate. End the end, as its been stated, different things inspire different emotions and feelings inside different people.
To me, I've always been fascinated by the Soviet culture. And I think many American's have as well, especially based on the amount of Soviet themes used in American popular culture through movies, books, etc.
And to me... this is just a pretty desktop with bold colors, romantic patterns, and the cool sickle and hammer logo of a fallen government.
For all of those who like the desktop, Great! Download it! For all of those of feel offended in anyway... its your choice to not use it.
In any case, I don't feel anyone on this website is condoning any sort of foul behavior of any peoples... we're just looking for pretty desktops : )

Someone said America is just seeking world domination at any cost?
That soviet icon is covering the entire world. What might that be implying? World domination. I don't like it.

30 million people dead due to communism? Try closer to 80 million, world wide. I think it was something like 40% of the world is headed by communist governments. Communism sounds great on paper, but in the end it takes away all reason for living and makes everyone feel the same. One of the greatest aspects of photography (and further, this site) is that we can express ourselves. If we had to worry about Bolsheviks [spelling?] and thoughtpolice, we wouldn't have great art collections like this site.
That emblem doesn't just represent Russia. It represents all of communism, and symbolizes all of the Marxist leaders who betrayed the people of their nation. Lenin, Stalin, CHINA and the "New Beijing..." Why someone would want that on their desktop is beyond me, even if you are a member of the proletariat.

Well off course USA is not killing it's own people... but is it less worse to kill people of other nations, to keep people in prisson for years on guantamnomo without a trial, to kill a lot of innocent raqies becasue they had a tiny thought some terrosrist was in there, to discrimate at airports and customs, send more soldiers to iraq when it's own nation is screaming not to, and the other polotocians, and the rest of the world...
don't point your finger at other because they were more wrong... there is no such thing as 'wrongerder'. Communism brought a lot of bad things to this world... so does america.
And don't forget... it's just a logo... Like nazi's used the swastika symbol... does not mean that every swastika symbolisez the death of millions of jew!

people who consider america to have a clean reputation are turning the other cheek to what is going on this very moment. not only is american government corrupt in it's own ways, it's also false to say we haven't mistreated our own citizens. do people simply choose to ignore japanese internment camps alltogether? don't give some patriotic shpeel about how it would be ok to have the american flag on your desktop but not a symbol of another government. no one ever seems to shit bricks when people have the "rising sun" AKA japanese flag on their desktop, because OMG anime/japanese shit is cool, uh, even though they totally sacked the city of Nanking in a raid some say is on par with the Holocaust. and if you don't know what i'm talking about, wiki it.

So, you think that just because America isn't innocent, it's all good to have a Marxist/Leninist wallpaper? I mean, if you honestly think communism is a social good, whatever- that's nobody's choice but your own; but you think that just because America isn't perfect, it makes it right to support communism?
Just curious, here.

It's very different to sit in a free country and say you love communism than to actually live in one. If some of you people like communism so much then go try living in China. I'm sure there are plenty of people there that would love to exchange places with you.
Every country is corrupt to some point; mainly because people are greedy and selfish.
The entire point of democracy (among other similar types of government) is to place power into the hands of many people so that, hopefully, some of them will have the common sense to stop the exploitation of the countries residents.
Communism, on paper, may look good; but in reality it just exploits its countries enhabitants ruthlessly.
So as I said, you like communism, try living in China.

Remembering the past is for everyone, fearing and ignoring it is for a skin head.
I'm just doing my part to break a f***ing taboo. Stop crumbling under all the bitching of all those Jews, Homosexuals, Poles, Serbians, Bosnians, disabled people, Free Masons, union workers, and Communists you are afraid to 'offend' with a symbol, with a historical fact.

You people who are railing against this wallpaper are aware that if it weren't for the USSR and the sacrifices of its people in the eastern front of World War 2 the Axis would have crushed the Allies easily, right? It's easy to forget this 60+ years later, eh?
That symbol doesn't just stand for the tyranny of Josef Stalin, it also stands for the iron-clad resolve of a people defending their motherland against a fascist regime. They may have held to differing political views than us, but they were honestly just people who wanted to have their own stake in the world and fought furiously to defend their right to it.
At any rate, if the creator of this wallpaper was really just going for shock value or symbolic hate speech, don't you think that it would have the swastika on it rather than the hammer and sickle? Hitler and Stalin were two entirely different beasts, despite having both committed terrible crimes against humanity.

Excellent image. I'd like to see it without the sickle and hammer (just the red star) as I don't think it's helpful to live in the past, nor to copy its formulas. It's on my desktop now, though.
It's unfortunate that it's impossible to hold a meaningful debate on a medium like this page.

Some comments on here are simply arrogant. If you don't like that symbol or that wallpaper, don't download it. However, do not comment on something that you don't know what you're talking about. Yes, certain governments in communist Russia were extremely bad. SO are many in the American Republic (not a democracy). It all depends on who is in charge at the current time. Russia now has a trash problem because they are no longer ordered to clean the villages. America may not be killing millions of its own people in a genocide, but we are killing several innocent people that didn't ask us to be in their country. Commenting on this, one must also remember that like the Nazis, we also had concentration camps (just not nearly as bad) during WWII (don't believe me, look it up). We also did have the huge thing called slavery! So does are flag really stand for freedom, or does it just stand for the illusion of freedom?

I completely agree with "oelandia _ gmail.com". I live in the the American Republic that claims to be a democracy. I work in the law enforcement section of the country. As the form of government is sound, but the policy's are wrong. The leaders are trying to make so many people happy they are completely messing up the country. I don't want to live in any set form of government because they are all easily corrupted, but i live in the nation i was born too. While dictatorships and the forms of government that are considered "evil" by the main stream are even easier to corrupt than a republic or the dream of democracy. I respect them more, at least i know what to expect from those types of government. I'd love to see how much ignorant comments would be made towards an Islamic wallpaper. Religion is an even bigger powder keg than fallen nations. (I'm not Islamic)

The American flag was designed by masons and they use the pentagram as a symbol of Satan worship along with the hexagram. The American flag has 50 pentagrams on it and every piece of military equipment has at least one pentagram. War is for blood sacrifice to Satan and that is ALL that there is to it. America was taken over by the evil system in 1776 and has been sliding down ever since...The pentagram is SATANIC... Get it out of your life...

How did this become a debate between Soviet Communism and American Democracy?
If anyone thinks that the Soviet Empire was a romantic place of an era gone by is totally messed up. Do you think of the Nazi era as a Wagnerian opera? Millions of civilians were murdered in peacetime Russia. You cannot compare this to WWII enemy deaths.
If you don't like the U.S., leave! You can! There is no wall to keep you in.
As for the wallpaper, it's in poor taste... similar to a Nazi swastika.

The rest of the world outside of america does not see this as anything but an old russian flag, after years of propaganda from successive presidencies, you can no longer represent a balanced view. as for never killing your own people, let me just say that the us government did sign a extermination order against a religeous group of americans, namely the mormons, and the friendly fire record of the us military is atrocious. Nice wallpaper, some nice tones and designs going on there.

As a matter of fact, millions of civilians were NOT murdered in peacetime Russia. At most, you could say that millions of civilians died in peacetime Russia for reasons that may or may not be the government's fault.
It is amazing how many people read or hear statements like "X government killed Y number of people" and never bother to find out some rather important details - such as, for example, what kind of "killing" are we talking about? How did all those people die? Did anyone in government actually order their deaths, or did they die as a side effect of something else the government was trying to do? Do we have accurate records, or are we just guessing how many people died? And so on and so forth.

No one in the Soviet government ever issued any order for killing millions of people; rather, most of the people that are commonly considered to be victims of the Soviet government died of famine during a short period of time (1929-1933). It is often stated that the famine was caused by intentionally bad agricultural policy enforced by the government. Even if true, that counts as manslaughter (killing people by negligence) not outright murder.
Yes, many people were indeed executed in the Soviet Union after being found guilty of various crimes - capital punishment was used, just like it is used in the United States today - but these people are counted in the thousands, not millions. Since the vast majority of the "millions of victims" of the Soviet Union were not actually shot or executed by the government, it is difficult or impossible to count them.

Some of the higher estimates of the number of deaths use ridiculously unprofessional methods; for example, when R.J. Rummel said that 20 million people were killed by Stalin in the 30s, he based his claim on population growth statistics, not any actual evidence of death. He looked at the population numbers in the 1920s, estimated how much the population should have grown in 15 years, and then looked at population statistics in 1940 and saw that population had only grown by a few million rather than the over 20 million he estimated. Then he concluded that this meant those 20 million people must have been killed by Stalin. That's absurd, of course - a lack of population growth can be due to all sorts of things besides mass murder - but this is how people get to accuse the Soviet Union of having killed millions.

Furthermore, it is improper to say that the SOVIET UNION killed those people; rather, ONE SPECIFIC ADMINISTRATION (that of Joseph Stalin) killed them. It is stupid to blame a country - or even more, an entire system of government such as communism - for the actions of only one specific administration. It's like blaming America for everything Bush does, or blaming democracy itself for every bad thing ever done by a democratic government. It is an absurd generalization.
FYI, the gulag was abolished soon after Stalin's death, in 1956. All in all, the post-Stalin USSR was a pretty nice place to live. Standards of living were not as high as in the West, but they were higher than in most of the world. And that was a remarkable achievement, considering that Russia started as an impoverished backwater in the 1900s.

I am an Eastern European myself (though not Russian). And I, for one, would love to have communism back. According to a recent poll, 24% of my countrymen also want communism back, 43% don't, and the rest are not sure. Yes, 24% is not a majority, but it is still far, far more than you'd get in the United States. Among the people who actually lived under communism, a few think it was great and a few think it was horrible, but most people think it was somewhere in between, with good parts and bad. That is a far more realistic stance than the crazy rants we often hear from the West.

Excellent comment! Too many americans are brain-washed to believe communism is bad. Their think US is innocent and some other country like China should collapse. Yes, many chinese want to live in us, but that is not because of its political system, just because they think us is much richer! like farmers in china want to live in cities. And now US is still killing people, of course not killing its own people, but those innocent ones in other countries. Killing foreign people is acceptable? Haaaaa, I remember the American flag represents the death of countless native Indians.

it's too bad too so many americans have been brainwashed into believing communism is bad. the soviet union was as good of a model for communism as the crusades were for christianity. they took a great idea and fucked it all up.
speaking of christianity, check out the living style of the early christian church in the middle east around 200 A.D.- all communal living... closest historical model to communism so far

I have to admit that a huge part of the comments gave me a good laught, Honestly, don't you see that this debate is vain.
You should think twice before posting, you're not giving a nice idea of your nation.
I'm european, and for me it's just an old fashioned picture, and a nice wallpaper.

The USSR was a horrible regime.
The USA wasn't and isn't quite as bad but it is a pretty crappy country, I should know, I'm American :)
If you like the soviet sickle because you think it's cool and edgy you should kill yourself though.
This is a good image because it's aesthetically pleasing, nothing more.
Thanks for the nice wallpaper :)

The government of the former ussr was evil and had killed many. The wallpaper can't kill people. So, criticize the politicians of the soviet union, but not the appearance of the artwork. You know, whatever will be the logo of the ussr looks like, whether its a hammer and sickle, or a nail and anvil, or a rake and shovel, it doesn't matter how it looks like, what matters is the government itself.

Shouldn't it be called Crimson Sunset instead of Crimson Dawn? Considering the symbolism and all...?
BTW, if you go to Eastern Europe or Russia, take your own toilet paper. They're out. That's all you need to know about communism. That and the fact that no one can leave. Leaving is called "escape."

IF stalin killed 30 million people then how the fuck had the population GROWN not to mention that would be devastating to ANY population? and how do you explain the fact that the ONLY people to be saying this were the nazis, your history books seem to wipe this little detail out eh, considering they were accusing Stalin of these atrocities only b/c jews were in high levels of his govt. like kaganovich?

The Soviet Archives reveal no more than 500K deliberately killed from 1924-1953, and the Russian intelligence Service calculates 667,000 with no more than 1 million in prison in any given year(which was 5 times less than the U.S. had in the 1990s). I'd trust the Russian intelligence service over this American Nazi propaganda since the ONLY people who said this were the Americans through Nazis newspapers as primary sources and were conveniently taken out of the sources since Harvard research as a source looks so much better than Josef Goebbels. Im so glad you trust the nazis over common sense

You people need to LEARN about how even a country in a marxist-leninist nation is run, it is run on collective leadership of a central committee, no one man in the Party has power all decisions are made through a Central Committee and the vote of its members To say Stalin even had the powers of an American President is ridiculous since Stalin at times was outvoted in the Central Commitee take for example the invasion of Poland, was against his wishes, the formation of Israel was against his wishes, all of these proposals were decided upon by a CENTRAL COMMITTEE, to say one man controls power is what Hitler, Mussolini, and even George Bush does, but they are serving the classes that they protect.

I agree with some of the other opinions here, Communism has killed well over 100 million people, so the symbolism to me is inappropriate.

Controversial as it may be, you have to look at it as art. Personally, I like it. BTW, I noticed lots of arguments about this image and the dominant icon projected in the center, so I did some research. And since nobody here knows what it represents, just what it means to them, I thought I'd share. The hammer represents workers, the sickle represents agriculturalists. The meaning of their being crossed is unity in working towards social & economic progression. The star they reside in means the society they have built, which also protects them. Although this is a primarily communist symbol, its symbolism can be paralleled to the foundation of ANY society.
Also, remember that this is merely art, not an attack on your moral or political beliefs. Therefore this artist is entitled to a fair, non-biased critique, just as much as anyone else. My moral to this story is maturity.

It's funny to see some people here claiming that America represents freedom and good, while communism represents evil and oppression. Who started the Iraq war? Hundreds of thousand of Iraqis are dead since the war started, simply because the US wants to secure its energy source.
Don't give me that "spreading democracy" crap, you've got to be an idiot to believe something like that. All governments in the world use propaganda. Bush ain't gonna tell you that "we're there to get the oil".

Listen to Reagan's 'evil empire' speech of '83. Lots of similarities between that and the Bush rhetoric leading up to the Iraq invasion of 2003. Communists were evil back then, mainly because they didn't officially believe in God. Now, Muslims are depicted as evil from right-wingers because they believe in the wrong type of God and/or don't belive that Jesus is the son of God.
Replace the hammer and sickle with the American flag and all you would have is what is exactly going on right now, today, over the whole planet. The US wants to protect its 'interests' in the middle east. Terrorism, right? Sure. How many defense corporations were licking their chops when 9/11 happened? War, war, war.
Here in Australia, the chairman of our major bank, Macquarie Bank, has an income larger than all of our democratically elected heads of states in Parliament combined.
Democracy doesn't govern you at all, the banks do.

@yondism,
The chairman of a bank earns a lot of money, but you dont have to set up a war to earn couple of millions, instead of 1 million. Same story for defense corporations.
BTw, the people will be angry if the elected heads earn an extraordinarily amount of money.

Wow...3 words: I am ashamed. Save these judgmental comments for later or, better yet, never, everyone, please! I was shocked to find these malicious comments! Those who have commented so harshly on the Soviet Union, you are cooking up your own meal of hatred towards this image. And so much language? I am deeply saddened.

The population in Soviet grew because of Stalins expansion. The baltic states, Poland, East-Germany, Ukraine, etc.
He could kill between 20 and 40 million of his own people without experiencing a dramatic drop in people. When labour was missing, millions was transferred from other Soviet-states.
In regards of the symbol: It represents so much death it's almost insane. Mao, Lenin, but Stalin in particular. Read some R. Conquest, R. Rummel, S. Montefiore, A. Applebaum, etc. The atrocities commited by Stalin is beyond belief, not to mention beyond what Hitler managed to do. And this man has been voted the 3rd most popular Russian ever... (really from Georgia). And Russia wonders why her neighbours joins NATO.

Communism is maybe a good idea but isn't good in real life.
Look at Russia: great country isn't it? (meant sarcastic)
Look at China: same as above, People only may have one child in that country... If you have one more it will be killed, or adopted (and i think its quite hard to lose a child ... )
Communism is only good for those who are very poor...

Re : Awful! Can't you make one with the nazi flag too?
That symbolize the death of more than 30 milj. people!
- complete bullshit. It symbolises communist regime and bad quality of life for USSR and Eastern Europe. At the same do remember that without Russians nazi Germans would burn the whole European (and possibly world) population in death camps, no way US could save Europe from massacre, read history. Choosing between two evils - better be under communist rule for some time than be dead
