The blue line is blurred waves on the water, as this was a 25" exposure. It's startling how it runs evenly across the frame from left to right, but it was present in every exposure I took of scene.

I was delighted with how much light my Rebel XTi gathered, as to my eye the scene was much more dark than this. Careful histogram review and adjustments in Lightroom helped to perfect the colors and bring out details hidden in the shadows; the initial view in the LCD review screen looked nothing like the final result! It's been so much fun learning to shoot pictures that satisfy me.

Wow. Just from the thumbnail, I wasn't terribly impressed, but after reading the tutorial and really looking at your dark areas, I'm impressed with this technique. I love how the more distant mountain is almost solid blue. Most people would either get that completely black or mostly black with annoying posterization. The wave line is kind of annoying, but I realize there is really nothing to be done about that, short of cloning it out.
Judging from the lights on the hill, it looks like you got a little bit of camera shake - probably when you pushed the button. I don't know much about the XTi, but my Canon A530 has a custom timer setting that comes in very handy in lowlight-tripod situations, because I can set it to start 2 seconds after I release the shutter button, which gives me time to get my hand off the camera and step away. Might be something to think about in the future.

Good point about the camera shake, AdamP -- my hands are very shaky naturally and I'm sure there was some tripod stuttering as I stepped back. When it's cold and I'm on my very last shot of the day it's easy to forget to use a good tool.

I was down at utah lake the other night taking some pictures. None of them turned out as good as this.

The XTi does have the timer function, even though it is longer than 2 seconds. Default is 10 seconds before it takes the picture on the Rebel. Nice picture by the way.

This is quite nice. The wave line along the shore doesn't bother me in the least. I think we need to simply admire nature instead of always trying to change it with Photoshop. Leave it as is, it's wonderful.

Bravo! I put this as my desktop and have gotten comment after comment. A lot of them are people from Provo area too and they never realized Utah Lake was so beautiful. Again, good work!
