Sandilands Lookout: Sunset

In Sandilands Provincial Park Forest in Manitoba has a realy nice look out spot. You have to do a bit of climbing but it's worth it. You can see for hundreds of miles. This is an HDR image shot with a Canon 40D, 10-22mm @ 10mm, F/8, ISO/100.

I used to live in eastern Manitoba years ago - your area shots bring back many memories. Your Sandilands shot is the best so far, keep up the great work...

The most important technical aspect of a shot like this is a perfectly horizontal horizon and you nailed it. Perfect.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful work. I have it as my dual monitor desktop. Everyone asks me where I got it.

I have to disagree with bdwilcox about the straight horizons. They are important but are trivial to fix. Far more important to get the exposures right with bracketed shots and then apply the right amount of tonemapping without going over the top. But I do agree that the photographer nailed this shot.

Thank you very much everyone. Chris G. I agree. Horizons are a cinch to correct. I really didn't think this was going to turn out when I took the shot. I even contemplated not taking it at all. Thankfully I did as it is now one of my favorites. Manitoba is not the best place on Earth for scenic landscapes (prairies) but you can get lucky now and then and find a cool spot. You can count on seeing more from me in the future as I learn this thing called photography.

I think you misunderstood what I was referring to. The most important technical issue in a piece like this is a level horizon because any canting of such a straight line will immediately be picked up by the brain. I wasn't referring to technical expertise in the making of the shot, but in the shot's presentation. Amateurs will be quick to show off a shot with pretty colors and dramatic lighting only to have the picture ruined by a simple, technical blemish like a tilted horizon. In this picture, the horizon is the strongest compositional element and any defects would have jumped off the page.

I love this shot. Not only, as mentioned, is it nice'n'level, but the colors in the sun/clouds really work to bring out the tree detail. Great shot!
