Portland Layers

July 28th, 2008

This is a bit of a classic. Pulpit Rock, Portland Bill. I waited until the Sun reached the the horizon. The Sun was crushing with the cliffs with a golden color. To get the blurred water effect I used a long exposure.

Try a neutral density filter (or multiple, stacked filters) and a longer exposure to smooth the water out even more. Excessive exposure length can result in noise/artifacts and reciprocity failure, so bracket your shots to find the right balance between exposure length and quality.

Awesome shot Joel, love the way the cliffs lead you into the pic. Beautiful light too.

Composition and exposure is top notch. I love that golden light it's always my favorite. Also I believe the water is smooth enough as well. Sometimes when you make it too smooth in certain instances in my opinion it has a adverse effect but it varies from image to image.

Great shot. Where exactly was this site? I ask for two reasons. One, I'd like to see this place in real life. And two, Once there, I'll throw all my photography equipment off onto the rocks because I can't take a shot that good!! :)
