Beautiful Stream

July 31st, 2008

Out about on another one of my photo finding missions I came across this stream. This is an HDR made from a single exposure. Canon 40D, 10-22mm @ 10mm, F/8, ISO-100.

Just to clarify, the aperture is F/8, not F/9.

Thanks. I have contacted IFL and it will be corrected as soon as they can.

This is in S.E. Manitoba, Canada. I have come many a little stream in my travels exploring the area around where I live.

From the little picture it looks beautiful, I can't wait until I can see it bigger :) By the way, what exact lens did you use? Just out of curiosity

I'm guessing he used the Sigma 10-22. Looks great, can't wait to see it big!

This is indeed my most favorite one out of your other ones here. I am glad you made this as realistic as possible. Despite the harsh light situation witnessed here.

Could you elaborate in "HDR from a single exposure" ? How exactly did you do it?

Here's a great tutorial on HDR from a single RAW image:

Beautiful shot. The one complaint I have is the white specs of detritus in the foreground of the stream. They definitely draw the eye and could have easily been touched out with the Magic Eraser Tool. In the old days, these would have been touched out by hand, so there's no sin in using Photoshop this way to improve the picture. As an aside, I would have also tried this shot with a polarizer to see how the water looked, but that's a style issue, not a technical one.

the greenery looks a little out of focus to me.

I love it! Great work and beautiful sky!

Just fyi:
If you use Dynamic Photo HDR, it let's you create a so called fakeHDR from any single jpg picture you want. Try it yourself, you won't regret it!

It's a great picture, but there's one thing in it that bothers me. For some reason, the edges/corners are darkened. Are you doing this on purpose? I noticed it on -some- of your other photos, and personally it just detracts from the surroundings.

Thank you everyone.

It was a very windy day when I took this photo which might explain some of the out of focus issues.

This was taken with my Canon 10-22mm lens.

I was lucky and even thought i was a bright day, I was able to get everything in one exposure with out blowing the highlights or shadows. Which is good as it wouldn't have worked to shoot 2 or more exposures for HDR processing.

inert010, I added a little vignetting to the picture. It is simply a personal taste thing that I like. It also works well when using the image as a desktop as it gives you a darker area to put your desktop icons.

You won't be seeing anything new from me in a couple weeks as I will be away on vacation but I hope to get some more to add to IFL.

Very nice shot. Thanks for sharing. Bingoyoyo mentioned the greenery looks a little out of place...I don't know if I think it's out of place, or just something about it's just too "busy".

Your beautiful stream only has one flaw. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to have an oil spill in the foreground!

aucklandcameraman, it's not oil, but just the reflection of the clouds and sky. A little further down are ripples from the wind. I can see how it may appear otherwise.

I just love how the sunlight seems to make the greenery glow. Excellent work! Everything is beautiful!

I live in Northwestern Ontario and during a presentation at the university I had closed PowerPoint and the class saw this as my wallpaper. Several students all were wondering where this came from as it is very close to home for us northerners... especially those who fish. I know of at least 10 people who use this currently as their wallpaper, I converted them :D. I, on the other hand, have wallpaper ADD and usually switch them daily.... However, I will have you know, this lasted a week :)
