Waterfall in the Woods
August 13th, 2008
I was vacationing up in Vermont with my family last week when I took this picture. It was a rather gloomy day, but the lack of sunlight allowed me to use a slower shutter speed and made for a nicer shot. For anyone that's interested, I believe the falls were called the Moss Glen Falls. Enjoy!

Absolutely beautiful! Great shot! I love the dark green contrast to the pearly white of the falls.

seagullplayer77, overcast lighting is the exact light you want for a shot like this. It lowers the contrast so you don't blow out the highlights or get muddy shadows. Studio photographers spend tens of thousands of dollars on lights and Chimera light boxes to get the same diffused light that you get with an overcast sky (for free).

The waterfall looks phony and doctored to me. Whatever happened to real photos?

I'm glad that everyone enjoys the picture. And to answer TexanTcb's question, I didn't doctor the photo at all--just cropped it to the proper aspect ratios and submitted it.

It's just a time-elapsed shot, that's why the water is unnaturally smooth. It's impossible to get both HDR color saturation and split-second shutter speed clarity; true "Photoshopping" must take place in order to have both at the same time.

All I can say is that the waterfall didn't appear realistic to me, therefore it was deleted from my wallpaper collection. To each his own. No offense to the photographer. Not to be negative, but the falls are not deep in the woods. In fact the sound of traffic often drowns out the sound of rushing water.

Love the image. Are these the falls that have the wooden bridge/path and sign off to the right that lists all the fatalities and injuries? :o

Thanks again for the compliments, fellas. I really appreciate it. And Tracy, while I've been to a number of waterfalls with signs like that, this wasn't one of them :-). The path leading to the falls had turned into a swamp in some places because of all the rain, but the trek was definitely worth it. Some of the nicest falls I've ever seen, really.
