Yellow Rock Park

September 28th, 2008

The yellow stuff on the rocks is lichen. Love the color, it adds to the scenery. Taken at Ambury Park, Auckland.

This is a great shot, but it lacks the pop of your other photos. The city in the back ground kind of takes away from natural look. The nice light in the sky and the unnatural city lights really clash, and the blur in the water from the lights is a little distracting. Also, I personally think the yellow on the rocks and the chaotic grass adds tension to the picture taking away from its serene "calm after the storm" look. Don't get me wrong, it's a good picture, its just not up to the standards of your other shots. Keep up the good work.

Although this shot is not one of my favourite's of yours, Chris, I disagree with the reasons in the comment above. Perhaps the 'unnatural city lights' make a statement: this is where wildness and civilisation exist next to each other. Maybe the yellow on the rocks and the yellow of the city lights emphasise this and the reflection of the lights in the water, which sort of reach out to the wilder part of the shot, do also. But maybe I'm just reading too much into it and you did not intend this. In any event, that's what it says to me and I think it's clever and beautiful. So thanks.

I like the insightful comments. It's kinda like the lichen makes its own city on the rocks and then there is a human civilization on the right. Maybe I am reading too much into it, too ;) Anyhow, I think this is a great picture on par with the others!
