I've long been mystified by this technique and I love it--how do you get the background to be black? I assume you don't like in a cave so that rules that out.

Y'know, now that Paul asked, I'm curious how you make it black too!

I like the fact that its all black, that's a nice thing for a background; I want to be able to see the things that are on my desktop ;p

Thanks for your comments.
It's pretty simple actually, the light was coming through the window from high clouds at a 45 degrees angle. No light was hitting the ceiling, and I exposed the dog (which was directly lit from the clouds). On the original shot, you could see a little bit of background, but since it was underexposed a lot, I simply reduced the black level, and it vanished. But it shouldn't work for humans, since a reduced black level on a face accentuates skin irregularities. You'd look as if you had some sort severe skin disease.

I love the dramatic effect of the black dog against the black background. Your labrador retriever is beautiful.

Excellent desktop! I'm a big dog lover, but this is still a great shot on its own merits. I almost feel like I could reach out and pet your lab. This would look phenomenal on a CRT. Very cool all around, and very cute pooch.

Gorgeous dog and a fantastic photo. Love that it's all black. Looks fabulous on my glossy 24-inch iMac screen which has a black border. As someone else said, icons stand out brilliantly against this. Love the expression on the dog's face, too.

Yeah, I'm a dog lover too. These black labradors seem to be very photogenic if it comes to black background shots.

Not only is your dog photogenic, but it looks so dignified and intelligent too. The black-on-black treatment is fabulous. By the way, unless I missed it above, what is your dog's name?

The dog's name is of the utmost originality. It's name is "Buddy". I know, I know, I didn't choose it.

As an animal lover and hobby photographer, I find this wallpaper to be extremely good. When I enlarged it I was gobsmacked. I said out loud "Oh my. This is awesome!" I love the excellent black level, and the fine details on Buddy's beautiful face.

Very good photograph. I'm planning on using this as a wallpaper for a long time...

Do you think it's possible to do the same with a white puppy?

But instead make the background white?
