It's a Small World

March 23rd, 2009

Playing around with fake tilt-shift miniatures with an old photo. This is a view of Auckland city from Mount Victoria, Devonport on a gloomy, overcast day.

Looking at this again I'm not sure if this works so well...

I think it would work better without so much blurring. My eyes keep trying to focus on stuff that of course won't focus. It hurts :) Nevertheless I think it's a very nice subject for miniaturizing - just without the blur, if possible.

The picture might turn out better if you cropped off the foreground land and had the focus on the land in the background with the river blurred.

I think the centered horizon doesn't really lend itself to miniature blurring. Something about that big blurred sky just makes this look off. Cropping out most of that gives it more focus and believability, in my opinion. (Still an interesting shot from one of IFL's best!)

Yeah, like my Baby Wine shot maybe blurred backgrounds don't always make good wallpapers. Would anyone like another sunset? :)

@nanogeek - it's not a river, it's the Waitamata Harbour, but good suggestion about the focus being on the land in the background. Other than that, I quite like this photo Chris.

Nice experimental shot, but not as a wallpaper.

@aucklandcameraman - Hey I'm from the middle of Texas. Anything that looks long and skinny is a river over here. :)

Chris, I love cityscapes with water features included. Could we have a more conventional shot of the harbor and skyline? From all the kind words above, you are still considered among the IFL elite. Keep that digital shutter aflutter!

@Adam - It's called the tilt-shift effect.
Look it up on Wikipedia. They have some really cool looking examples.

Is it possible to splice together multiple tilt-shift shots of this same frame and combine them, so everything is in focus? if you think about, if this were a photo of a REAL miniture model of a city, then everything would be more in focus anyway.

I think that this is an in focus photo that was tilt-shifted on the computer. The in focus version should already exist.

sorry man, the blur is just not my bag.

democritus: but if you WERE to take a picture of a miniature city, then it would be similar to a really good tilt-shift of a REAL city. But, I grant you that there are pictures of miniatures that have no blurry spots due to having just the right angle on them.

Great concept, but you really need to work on your depth of field. All you have in focus is the middle 25% of the river and there's very little there of interest. generally this type of landscape is less artsy-fartsy fuzzy and more crisp, clear and in focus. Chances are you shot this with a wide open aperture ... or nearly so. Stop it down and get the more of the model in focus. Fuzzy is for faces, not skylines.

@Glaeken62p, you need to read the description before offering your "expert" opinion.

@ Glaeken62p: Nice try. But you failed. You should prob read more than one little photography book before you start blasting peoples pics. Read the description next time and save yourself some embaresment. This type of shot could not have been taken the way you suggest. This is a photo manipulation(tilt shift in PS). There are tilt shift lenses that produce this effect and it is a desired effect but Im guessing you never heard of that , ay?
