Wallpaper Details: San Francisco From Portrero Hill
San Francisco from Portrero Hill
By MattGranz
April 14th, 2009
I was once mugged at gunpoint on this very hill, but the view is so spectacular that I had to come back 20 years later and get a shot of one of the best views available of my favorite city.

In my opinion this photo is too busy to became a wallpaper, but it makes me think about a song of U2: The city of blinding lights..nice shot!

Great shot, Matt! Love the long exposure, really makes the background pop out at you!
@quinnoth - muggers would probably target rich areas such as, it seems, the one in the foreground.
@BJBProductions and lerch84 - I feel it's quite busy too... but I still set it as my wallpaper!

I think this picture would be cool split in half horizontally. One with the highway and the city, and the other with the hill lined with cars. Awesome lighting, as everyone else has said.

I went through several attempts to find this intersection with no such luck. The ones I pass through has overhead electrical wires ruining my shot. Mind sharing the intersection streets?

Very nice capture! It would be nice for a bit more sky above the building (my menu bar cuts off the tops a few of them), but thats a very minor gripe against a fantastic picture. It's on my desktop and in my "cityscapes" wallpaper folder :)

good perspective
I find that the buildings in the background have a plastic look to them. The oddly lit tree in the foreground left is distracting.
I think that this image would have turned out better if it were a series of different exposures segmented together.

I like it. Something I notice is that all of those cars seem awfully clean. Is that because of the long exposure, or are they all really that clean??
here in Canada its a very rare occasion that we see that many clean cars all together at once, especially in the slushy spring.

Images like these make me thankful for OS X's docking feature = no icons on my desktop. And yes, i know this isn't a Mac page.

I use Windows XP, but I don't put anything on the desktop. Instead, I put everything I need on the Quick Launch toolbar, and then I have the taskbar twice as high as the default height so that everything I open goes underneath the Quick Launch toolbar. It's really slick. Plus, I can always see full date instead of just the clock. But one of the reasons why I have it set this way is for amazing wallpapers like THIS one.

for the one who asked about the type of cam: its a NIKON D90
its a wonderful photo before being a wallpaper - don't care about these busy comments, yet I have some few questions as a beginner, I am using a Samsung camera S1060 and have some probs at shooting at night, although that i'm using a stand and adjusted the cam at low ISO/high senstivity, yet i found the photo either noised or in a sharp quality but sensitive to moving objects:
- did you use "reduce noise"? cuz i can see some of noise traces
- did you sharpen the image some how? cuz i can see the sharped edges of the buildings little bit, or may be you used smart sharpen!!
- did you blink the lights of the city?
- any other recommendations for shooting at night?! does my camera support it?!
thx

Okay... a few answers to questions. This shot was indeed taken with a Nikon D90 with a 50mm (1.8) lens. The photo was sharpened slightly and a small amount of noise ninja applied as well. Since I took this pic I have since found that taking a 9 photo composite works even better for getting detail when using my 18-105mm lens. The area where I was mugged was just three blocks up the hill where the crack houses are... the area I'm in is a rich area. I would have included more sky but the lens was a 50mm and the foreground is far more interesting than the sky and since I use a transparent menu bar in OSX, I like the effect of the image going into it. The tree is one of my favorite parts of this picture with the color it introduces. Lastly, I think I was around 19th and Texas St. like someone guessed, but not sure if that's the exact location. It is close however.

i like this shot. i used to play basketball at the potrero hill gym. i always wanted to get a shot of the city from there, and you did a great job of it. i know there are higher points in potrero you might be able to get a better shot of the city, but then again you might be closer to getting mugged again.

Although you did say 20 years on, i guess alot can change.
I love the shot though. Great division lines.
