yet another one of those "anyone there at the time would have taken an identical one" photos.

so you're on your greek vacation, you're driving from point A to point B, you see a bay you like, you pull over, roll down the window, dont even have to step out of the car, you press the shutter, and you drive on.

this is a postcard. I require my wallpapers to have soul, a trace of artistic merit. not much, just enough to give me something to think about or feel, for at least a second. like the picture before this one. this one has none of that.

technically also nothing to write home about. it's fuzzy ala nikon, no surprise there, but if i didn't know it was D300 i would think it was shot with a compact with a white balance set to a "cloudy day". how did such screwed up WB made it past so many hands?

my question is, why is it that people with canons take not only technically but also artistically better shots than the nikon crowd?

I think Burrn Baby is angry that none of his pictures have been accepted. Congratulations on getting a picture on the site.

Burrn Baby- try having a soul yourself: anyone can rip a photo apart if it's not perfect. It takes some insight to give constructive criticism.

Nice shot. Love the colors. I would love to see something more in the foreground but other than that its a pretty good shot.

I agree with Bendykst. BB is just angry and maybe jealous. @ Burn Baby you have had three diff accounts and keep getting banned but u just create a new account. Take a hint, find somewhere else to post your unhelpful negative nonsense.

While tact is clearly a foreign concept for Burn, I must agree with many of his comments about this photo. It's a really nice shot to bring home after a trip, but nothing stands out about it. Burn put it as lacking "soul." As nice as it is, it just fails to pop.

But Burn, I do wish you would find a way to offer your criticism, negative or otherwise, without being insulting. It would serve us all (including you) better. I know you're aiming to be brutally honest but it only comes off as pubescent angst. As someone who speaks publicly for a living, I can say from experience that your communication skills will only improve when you listen to your audience's critiques, and I don't mean just mine. Do what you wish with our feedback, but please appreciate that it is not a sign of weakness to grow from criticism. After all, that is what you're striving to motivate with many of your comments, is it not?

That's it. I have had enough!

Burn Baby: this website isn't all about making you happy. That comment where you said "I require my wallpapers to have..." clearly shows me that you'd be MUCH happier if each and every last submission needed to meet your personal approval before it could be posted here on IFL.

But guess what: if you don't like a submission, or if it doesn't meet your extremely high standards, then keep moving. Nobody is forcing you to make a comment. These comments of yours make you look like a major snob, and it seems that if a wallpaper doesn't please you, then it's garbage - regardless if it pleases anyone else (go ahead and tell me I'm wrong: I can see right through you). It looks like you think that you are the ultimate judge of photography. But believe it or not, IFL isn't all about you. Besides, I have yet to see a submission by you (and I think I know why). But if we see a submission from you, then it had better be your own work, and it had better be the best submission to EVER be posted on IFL. After all, with comments like yours, your work should be absolutely perfect, flawless, sublime, and just an absolute work of art that will put EVERYONE to shame. But if we see some work from you that is less than perfect, if it's less than stunning, and if it doesn't make our jaws drop, then I think everyone has every right to make you feel like the worst photographer that ever lived - as though you have no business taking pictures; not even with a disposable camera.

Finally: IFL is free, so relax! Not only is it free, but Jeff isn't posting these to make only YOU happy; there's something for everyone! But there's no need to turn your nose up at a submission like this and basically say something that warrants a reply like the following: "then let's see you do better!

So that's what it amounts to: let's see you do better. After all, you've made a seemingly-endless stream of rude comments about most submissions on here over the past month or so as though you are the god of photography and as though you're the ultimate judge of it. But yet you have done absolutely NOTHING to qualify or justify any of your comments (which, by the way, are never constructive - they're DEstructive). After all, how can you make such destructive, condescending, and criticizing comments when you have nothing to back it up? You have absolutely nothing to show anyone that you know what you're talking about. NOTHING! So, if you're such a good judge of photography, then prove it. Take some photos yourself and submit them! With the way you talk, they will surely be posted, right?

I have some good news for you tho, because I know this will make you happy: you are single-handedly ruining IFL for me. As I'm sure some of the other IFL members have noticed, I haven't posted a comment in a long time; but it's all because of you. Thanks to you, I'm absolutely SICK of looking at the comments! I almost hate coming here now because of you! And so I have had enough of this crap. It's time I say something, and I guess this is what I have chosen to say.

So get over yourself and start showing some intelligence and maturity! You know: BE REAL?! Come on, man! It's not that difficult. And besides: THIS IS A FREE SITE! So stop posting crap as though you are paying good money for this and therefore "require" better! Who do you think you ARE, anyway?! Are you God's gift to IFL?! Actually, you know what? You are by far the most SELFISH person I have EVER seen posting here on IFL to date, and I have been reading the comments for nearly a YEAR now!

So again: I've had enough, and this is the result. I'm sorry, everyone. I truly am. But I think this little game of his has been going on for far too long now, and so I just can't keep this to myself anymore.

This picture is very beautiful but is slightly lacking in the creative field. I hope lucasmpinelli that you don't take the harsh comments of BB too seriously though because I have friends who are harsh judges of art -- and they're nice people but they are brutally honest. I would hope, however, that BB for the sake of not angering other comment-ers, would tone down his comments so as to keep the morale higher on this website. After all we're all here to enjoy some good art, so let's try to enjoy it as much as possible.

"...start showing some intelligence and MATURITY." I have capitalized the key word, Tim, in your well taken reprimand. I suspect the person in question is behaving this way simply to attract attention. I suppose we are in a way 'feeding the troll.'

I don't think, however, you have to be accomplished in an art to be a decent critic. Lord knows I love good food, but have no talent for cooking. I heartily agree that negative comments should be constructive--not simply demeaning.

I too have considered absenting myself from this group. What originally attracted me here was the level of excellent work and the reasoned commentary by its members. If it devolves into just another snipe session, then I'll take my leave.

Thank you.

By the way, I took the liberty of cropping the image and diddling with the levels. In my humble estimation it helped. If there were more foreground interest, I don't think cropping would be necessary. Keep on snapping and we'll keep on clapping.

I have a solution for Burn... Make your own wallpapers to suit your soul (if you have one) That's what I do. I also come here to get ideas and download a few as well.
The Canon vs Nikon debate is just plain stupid. Just shows the immaturity that is obviously Burn. I have both Nikon and Canon. I like both for different reasons. Both will produce the same quality of pic. But Burn, get over it. If you don't like it, don't download it.

I prefer Nikon if I am going to carry and shoot it all day though. Canon is ok on tripod in a studio.

As for this picture, I think its nice. Could it have been better? Yes. That goes for all pictures taken and submitted here. And its perfect for a computer screen wallpaper.

I really get tired of reading about how some of the people here just want museum or gallery quality pictures, and nothing else is good enough. What are you doing with those pictures? Blowing them up to size and framing them and selling them in your corner gallery or something? Get real.

Sorry for the double post..

Another thing Burn... can you share with us with all your infinite wisdom and expertise as to just how the white balance of this picture is totally screwed?

I will be adding a feature in the next few days that will give registered members the ability to "ignore" all comments posted by specific users. Once you "ignore" a user you will no longer see their comments in the thread. Other members who have not chosen to ignore that user will still be able to browse their comments. The idea is to give each user control over what comments they see, since everyone has a different perception of value. If you have any comments or suggestions about the proposed feature, please contact me via the 'Email Webmaster' link at the bottom of the page (rather than replying to this admittedly off-topic comment).

In the meantime, please do not feed the trolls...

Great picture! :) It's got more than enough "soul" for me.

The thumbnail is really bad, though.

Wow, Tim, wow. Thanks for saying what should have been said months ago.

I agree with stubulman, though, in saying that critics need to be accomplished artists. I simply love IFL, and I have little to no artistic ability whatsoever. In my case, I wish that I COULD shoot the kinds of photos that are featured here. But as far as BurnBaby's comments, well, I just wish that he (or she) would simply walk away. You are ruining it for everyone else who is here to appreciate really, really good art.

Do you know what I require? I require silence in the viewing gallery! Leave your ego at the door and tell me what you like about the pieces, instead of making the artist feel small!

The irony here is that, more than likely, all of the artists know that BurnBaby's comments are nothing to worry about. The community has reduced this person to nothing more than static on the airwaves.

Thanks to all of the artists - from one person who considers himself a true lover of great photography, you give me a reason to keep coming back to IFL. Maybe I'll post some of my own stuff one day (constructive comments only, please!!)

Thank you.

Whoops. Sorry. I mean to say "I agree with stubulman, though, in saying that critics need NOT to be accomplished artists." I apologize for the error.

The best comment you can make about a photo is that you like it. I like this and it makes me feel good to look at it.
The best way to deal with the Burrning Babies of the world? Ignore them and they faaaaddddee away. His notices are solely meant to provoke, and we've all allowed him to do do so.
Nice job on the photo.

Hey everyone, thank you for all of you comments. I appreciate all of the passionate and constructive responses. As for Burrn baby, while his comment was somewhat uncalled for and borderline offensive I also agree with some of his criticism that others have given as well. I do not believe that this is a perfect photo by any means. I realize that the foreground leaves a lot to be desired and it in no way oozes creativity. If I had it my way I would have replaced this photograph with others of mine that I feel are of higher quality but in the past those have not been accepted. Go figure. I will continue to submit and hope that more of my photographs will be accepted so that viewers can see more of my work. I am here to learn and grow as an artist and the more feedback the better. Once again thank you everyone for being so helpful, I really appreciate it.

I think you should have cloned out that ship, would have been so easy to do.

Sure it qould have been easy to clone out that ship, but is it necessary? I think it makes the photo even better!

Hmm... The colour of green keeps the screen too much. I think you should have taken it more close to the sea. It is a nice photo but it cannot be a wallpaper.

This is such a wonderful picture. I recently bought a camera and have been learning about photography. How do you get such great colors and clarity in your photographs?
Posted By: lucasmpinelli
about 14 years, 8 months ago
Well I am by no definition an expert as I have only been photographing "seriously" for a little under two years. The best advice I can give is don't be afraid to experiment, whether it is with equipment, techniques, locations, etc. Color and clarity can be mastered in many many ways by means of proper exposure, proper focusing, HDR techniques, filters, lenses, camera profile settings, post-processing, and so on. Photography is a complex art that I have in no way mastered but I enjoy its pursuit. I think that if you enjoy photographing then the results will eventually come. I'm not sure if that is exactly the response you are looking for but hopefully it helps some. Good luck and enjoy shooting!

I'm no artist or anything, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but I really like this picture. I suppose there could have been more in the foreground, but the depth of the picture makes it interesting enough for me. And I love the colors. It will be my wallpaper until I decide to change it. (Usually two or three weeks.)
