The Mesquite Dunes

July 14th, 2009

In Death Valley, even in the Spring with the air only warming to 87 degrees Fahrenheit, one must pack plenty of water. This was my lesson as I found myself parched after walking 45 minutes to the middle of the sand dunes just outside of the Stovepipe Wells area with only one liter of water on me. A lesson learned the hard way. You can literally lose yourself in this vast and wondrous landscape. The shapes continually shift as you wend your way through this amazing place. If I had enough water on me I could have stayed many more hours than I did. As it calls me back, I am in hopes to return in the Fall... with lots of water.

May I recommend a CamelBak. I mountain bike and hike and they are great. The U.S. Army also gives them to soldiers. they usually have a 3 liter capacity.

Totally unreal! If it weren't for the blue sky and scraps of vegetation I'd think this was taken on another planet. The trek was absolutely worth it, amazing shot.

I second Buck, CamelBak's are great.

And as for the picture, It's been a while since I've seen a shot with such well defined fore, middle, and background. Wonderful composition. It's going right on my desktop, replacing another one of yours actually :)

I agree with mredpopo..this photo has a really high resolution in every its part, so you can see the curves of dunes and the white color of sand, the pureness of that blue sky and how uneven is that mountain!

The view is simply unnatural. So much details and the contrast between the dunes and the rocks is perfect. Amazing one!

Great picture but, hey man, there's a reason they call it Death Valley and it's not because the name looks good on tourist brochures. And, like scuba diving in the ocean, you should never walk alone in the desert. There's an ocean of sand out there that's every bit as unforgiving as the ocean of water.

Thank You for taking us to strange but beautiful places. Even reading the description is a pleasure.

WhiteDog, you are absolutely 100% correct. I was sent out there by some kind unwitting souls after shooting the Alabama Hills near the Whitney Portal early one morning. No doubt about it... Death Valley wants to kill you. I have a deep respect for it since that day, and would never dream of traveling through it just by myself ever again. It is a beautiful deadly place, just like the ocean as you said.

Great shot, man!

Everything's so sharp and crisp, the colors are vivid---almost like I'm actually there. Definitely going on the desktop for a while!
