Above the Clouds

September 24th, 2009

I snapped this while flying back home from New York City. I was happy that I had my camera on the plane with me to capture this.

I really like the "Smithfield Street Bridge Lights" photo on your flickr page. Any plans to submit it to IFL??

Nice shot! I did some photos from a plane not a long ago but clouds and sky were not so intense as these.

Did you take this from behind a window? How come there isn't even a single trace of marks on the window?

Nice!
But I have the same question. How did you manage to take this picture without any window artifacts?

Thank you all for the great comments! This is too, one of my favorite images that I have done.

Se7en- I will indeed upload "Smithfield Street Bridge Lights" to interfacelift. I am glad you like it.

hanoilulu & lumixmtb- Good question! And I have been asking the same myself! I really do not know how that happened! Guess I was lucky. The windows were a mess! I clone stamped just a few noticeable spots out, but as for the rest, I am really not sure.

Thanks again everyone!

Really nice work. I downloaded this as my desktop background at work. The clouds look like dirty cotton balls!

Instant wallpaper! Fantastic picture indeed.

I took a similar shot over Greenland many years ago on my very first digital camera - sadly only at 640x480 resolution, in the days when that was just about enough! It's on my website at tonywhite.com - picture 16 in the slideshow if anyone cares! I had to play around with the contrast and the levels though because, as has been mentioned, airplane windows are usually rather opaque rather than clear, and one can get quite a lot of reflected glare. I was lucky - Greenland was cloud free on my occasion and I got a fantastic shot of a glacier from above and even the curvature of the horizon. One day I shall be back on that trip with a decent camera to hand and a window seat!

Excellent shot. I voted for this in the loupe. Airplane windows can be nasty but sometimes you get lucky and get a fairly clear window. I got lucky flying to Mexico in '08: http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/_inc/vote.php?id=7265&sort=rating&artist_id=12031&page=1

It's a truly amazing shot. There is nothing at all about it that would suggest it was taken from behind a window. Bravo.

"Please do post the original."

The pic on my site pretty much IS the original (notwithstanding the watermark). It was my first (cheap) digicam: in 1999 you didn't get a very good resolution back then so, sorry, but I can't make that particular picture any better! (Much as I wish I could - there's a lot of pictures I took that trip - like the red leaf in the same gallery - that I really wish I had larger versions of. Some of them I really want to frame!)

This is definitely one of my favorite images on IFL. I feel like I am floating over the world while sitting at my desk. Thanks for the great post!

This has been on my desktop for a couple of weeks now and I enjoy it still. Maybe because it is an unusual picture and point of view. "So this is how it looks up there"... ;)
