Very Large Array
January 3rd, 2010
The Very Large Array is a space observatory that converts electric signals from space into images, but doesn't really "listen" to space like the movie Contact makes us believe. It is an impressive site to visit! I thought a duotone was appropriate here as the sky was overcast with a haze.
Canon EOS 5D Mark II with Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM lens. Developed in Lightroom, adjustments in Photoshop.

This is going up on my computer immediately. One of my dreams is to visit here and take pictures. Can you just walk around or do you need permission?

Its great work for what it is it illustrates the observatory very well but that said I`m not sure I will use it as a wallpaper since the only thing that catches my eye is the observatory itself and the rest of the picture looks pretty bland. This would make a great picture in an exclopedia or science magazine in my opinion.

You can indeed walk around without permission, but I have a sneaking suspicion that there are unique hours. There is a small museum that is open during the day, and I believe that a gate closes off the area at night, but I can't remember. It isn't near anything and that is what makes it truly amazing.

Good decision about the duotone. Gives the image a classic feel. I also like the latitude and longitude you use to identify the location. Drives us to Google Maps to find out where it is.

It's impressive to see how detailed appears in your photo this big antenna..and the entire scene is perfect as wallpaper: it's not too busy and its colour is relaxing!

Though the movie Contact used its dramatic license in parts, I believe they were in fact listening to a radio signal, which is what the VLA would pick up. Cool photo.

There's something about the 1440x900 version that i'm finding quite magical. The support bars look like they're the perfect thickness with reference to the pixel size (at least on this laptop), so it all looks fantastically crisp.

Nice picture ... of a single element of the array.
An array is a systematic arrangement of objects, usually in rows and columns.
