Sunrise over the Namib's Dunes

February 18th, 2010

I took this picture on my recent trip through Southern Africa. We went to climb up the famous Dune 45 close to Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert at about half past five to see the sunrise from the dune. This picture is taken just before the Sun appeared over the horizon. The colours were amazing and the untouched dune before me was truly magical.

Canon EOS 40D with Tamron 17-50mm 2.8. RAW file developed in Adobe Lightroom 2 and Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Yes, a very nice wallpaper indeed! The colors are great - the noise not so much...

I agree about the noise, but it still makes a good wallpaper as it's nice and smooth and doesn't clash with icons.

As an aside, didn't Windows XP come with something very similar?

I love the colors of the sky....the sand being blown away on the top of the right hill looks like it was smudged, it couldve been removed

thx for all your comments. I'm well aware of the technical issues this image has. Noise, not really good sharpness, etc. Still I thought it's worth sharing with you.
The conditions were quite hard anyways. Shot this with ISO 400 and 1/13th of a second at 17mm.
And as you can imagine, in the sand of the Dune it was kind of impossible to use a tripod...
One more thing to the sand on top of the dune:
It was literally blown over the edge by the wind up there. It was quite windy and I like this little movement in the picture since it shows the force that actually created the edge on top of the dune. That's the reason I did not remove it.

This is why I love this site-- it posts great wallpapers created via much effort. Despite the technical issues the artist notes, it is a great picture nonetheless. I much prefer this type of thing to images uploaded and sourced elsewhere.

I think it is beautiful, and to me, the noise and sharpness are not that distracting. It still seems to be pretty sharp. One could get a nice 8x10" photo printed easily.

Hey Leon_J,

Awesome picture and thanks for sharing. I live in Namibia and have been to Sousousvlei, it's amazing and your picture captures a little bit of the beauty of Namibia. Share some more if you have any. I have travelled Namibia Extenseively, for work, but with no good camera; I can only share my memories and recount the beauty.

Again great picture and thanks for sharing.

thx for your comment front_runner25.
I loved Namibia and I envy you for living in this beautiful country!
I got hundreds of more pictures but mostly of wildlife - that is mammals and birds. Maybe I'll upload some of these as well.
So far have a look at my loupe submissions. The recent ones are all from Southern Africa, even though mostly from South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe... but i'll upload some more =)
