Peaceful

July 19th, 2010

Just testing the distagon on this kind of photo. The weather these last days has been terrible, very cloud. I hope to do better in the next days.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Carl Zeiss Ikon 21mm f/2.8 Distagon T* ZE, Hitech Reverse GND 0.9.

the photo's fine, much like most of your other work, but at this point it just feels so frikin generic!

the picture is very nice, but when half the website is made of these same looking fine pictures, they just start blurring together. that's the problem with these sea/rocks/sunset shots. there's only that much you can do, after that it's the same thing over and over agian. with a slightly different angle, slightly different cloud shape, and a slightly different height of the sun.

This image shows the advantages of a high-end camera and great glass. The detail in the rocks and the moss are sharp, without artifacts; in this case the blurred water resulting from the slow exposure paints a nice contrast to the clear detail in the foreground. Good job, weather notwithstanding. With a picture like this as a starting point, if you wanted to add film grain or noise in post-processing, it would be a creative choice, not one imposed by an inadequate camera. Not that most of us can afford a 5D or a Zeiss lens, but it gives us something to aspire to. :-)

I love this great wallpaper and frankly I never get tired of all the wonderful seascape sunset images long exposure or not I love them all. I believe that every sunset and every seascape image is unique from the rest. I just simply don't understand all the continued complaining regarding these type of wallpapers. They are fantastic and work great as wallpaper. One slight issue I have with grad ND filters is that they tend to burn some shadowy areas to pure black and making the scene looks somewhat unnatural but it's nothing that would prevent me from using a wallpaper on my desktop. Keep up great work buddy. I love all your other submissions. Cheers.

quicksand, at least it's not purple/pink like most of the others.

The water is too limpid and there is too much aubade in the atmosphere. With an image this flawless, there are only two possibilities: the viewer will try to enter the scene but crack his head on the computer screen, or he will somehow succeed but drown. It's simply irresponsible of the submitter to submit this photo.

i don't understand why quicksand comes on here and just bashes every photo, when the only one he has taken and submitted should have been an HDR.

awesome photograph here though, i love all of the dreamy water photos you submit :)

@KamilGalimski. he's probly jealous ;)

i for one, love this photo. and i love sunsets..all of them. they are never the same, different location different perspective, and just a different kind of feel; or at least thats what i think.
i like all your submissions and think your a great photographer. Keep it up.

The same could be said about every kind of photo ever made.

-Oh, these portraits are so generic! Every single one looks the same except its a different angle, face, etc

-Oh, these monochromatic photos are so generic! Every single one looks the same except its a different color, object, etc.

It's always going to be the same thing, but different. But whoever gets the better angle, the better cloud shape, better face shot, better color organization, makes the better photo. Any one can take a landscape sunset, but not everyone can make a GREAT sunset photo.

^^Which is why this photo made it to the front.

This picture is very nice and I love the detail. It will not appear on my desktop for only one reason: I already have a few of Masterchief's submissions that already resemble this. That doesn't mean that it might not appeal to someone else though who might have different taste. By all means, this is a great wallpaper, 4/5 starts in my book. Too many users on this site are stuck-up and live in a world of sophistication with big words that they dug up from a thesaurus. There are no rules or limits to the happiness that one can receive from a photograph and calling the submitter irresponsible for delivering that happiness to an individual who likes it is a pompous imbecile.

Tophmeister, most portrait photography is indeed incredibly uninspiring. And only children claim that black and white photos are all the same. I think you forgot to install your point plugin.

Your closing paragraph basically asserts that popularity dictates quality. I don't think I need to list the obligatory examples that blow your premise out of the water.

Read quicksand's post again. You'll find that he's not saying these photos don't take considerable skill and talent to create. What he is saying is that the obsession here with coastlines borders on psychotic.

OK, I'm joking (slightly). I'm just saying it's a big, big world, yet strangely we all seem to hate our lives so much that we need to constantly imagine flinging ourselves into warm seas as the sun sets on our watery graves in order to escape the monotony of life.

What?

@brizkit

Is that such a bad thing? I don't think we hate our lives, but we certainly like a photograph that comes from a place we wish that we were at :)

Anyone tired of looking at sunsets (and sunrises) has lost the knack of seeing. It's easy to fall into the habit of intellectualizing photographs and photography, as happens far too often with all the arts. But you cannot capture a sunset - or a portrait, for that matter - in words. The artist creating the image may be more or less capable of the sublime insight that lifts a picture beyond the ordinary, but the viewer is ultimately responsible for what h/she gets from the experience of art.

I don't mean to say that all criticism is bootless; but much of it is ill conceived. Sometimes we are prisoners of our own minds, unable or unwilling to connect with the world around us. The whole point of art, in my opinion, is to draw us outside of ourselves, to expand our horizons - to free us from prison. This purpose can fail for one of two reasons: either the art is insufficiently inspiring, or we are incapable of being inspired. The first is unfortunate, the latter a tragedy.

All I can say is... I really feel sorry for some folks that can't learn to appreciate the wonderful nature in it's beauty. There must be a lot of unhappy and depressed folks living in caves these days that hate their lives and everything around them. I am engulfed in the beauty on a daily basis and am indulging life as it comes in only positive way. Life is great and so are all the wonderful sunsets every daily. I enjoy sunsets and I can watch them every night with my wife. Keep these coming buddy and don't listen to all the naysayers... majority rules... lol. Cheers.

This is an Amazing one, go one and don't listen to anyone talking it out. Igor and WhiteDog: good point.

I don't know about this. Would you rather go to a museum that rotates exhibits to show variety, or would you prefer to go to the museum that *only* showcases varieties of the same topic?

Sunsets may indeed be all that Igor and WhiteDog say that they are. But my heavens, is this all that we are going to be exposed to? Yes, they are amazing. But there's plenty out there on planet Earth that is equally amazing. Aren't we limiting ourselves?

@Igor

you said it all. some people really need to take a look around them and realize exactly what is beautiful. not every sunset is exactly the same, so i don't see how someone can get sick of seeing photographs of sunsets in locations they most likely have never been to. there is no such thing as a perfect sunset, but all are beautiful in their own ways and we need to learn to appreciate the people who can bring them to us in these great photos. keep it up with the great sunsets MasterChief
