Storm in Whistler, BC, Canada

July 27th, 2010

I took this photo at the top of Whistler mountain after a huge electrical storm. This was taken quiet late at night, around 10:30pm. It was taken around July 2009. Amazing sight.

Olympus MJU 770.

this could have been a fantastic picture if it wasn't for the blurry mass that took over the top left quarter of the photo. not just composition-wise, but also technically (heavy noise) it spoils it.

Noise and a little bit blurry but because of that it looks like a painting so it's ok.

It's a great motive and I very much like the cloud formation. The noise however, which probably originated from excessive color correction, could have been fixed in Photoshop with the selection tool and Gaussian blur. Still, this is a very, very nice photo!

That "blurry mass" looks like rain to me.
Anyway, the image is great. A small amount of noise does not ruin a photo, if fact, sometimes it can enhance it.
Cheers :)

@hailey-lane:
Superb! But there is a bit too much noise for me...

@sabern:
You tried your best and succeeded!
Can you also make a 1920 x 1080 version?
Thanks in advance!

EXIF shows it was taken with a Olympus u720SW, not a Nikon D90, fyi. Great shot, too!
about 13 years, 7 months ago
Nice shot. I haven't checked EXIF but if what Paul is saying is true than that would make a lot of sense. I know D90 would have handled this scene in a more professional aspect, I am not saying that something is wrong with this image. I do know though if this was shot with D90 it would be much sharper and less noisier but considering rough terrain at this site, a bullet proof Olympus u720SW would make perfect sense even if it sacrificed a little on the image quality. Good job capturing this unique moment though. Cheers.

"around 10:30pm" and the sun is setting or something? Am I missing something here?

Great photo btw, thank you for sharing.

Crazy little shot, hailey-lane!

Knaim2, Whistler is well north. Long days up there. Definitely a setting sun.

A really nice shot, and quite a unique one at that :) Good work.

I just thought the noise was rather disappointing.. sabern did a nice attempt to correct it, but he cloned out a piece of the cloud on the left for some reason.

I'm not a photoshop guru by any means, but I did a humble attempt to make a noise-free version while leaving the details intact:

This is the 16:10 version, if you want it in 16:9 format, just cut off 160px from the bottom.. ;)

Any idiot can remove noise from a photo. I wish you lot would stop trying to improve perfectly good images with your one click PS solutions :(

@Psilocybe
Perfect job. Thank you.

@rejectEd
Nice attitude there. He's just trying to help some other people who no nothing about photoshop. He just shared the effort he made. And he of course enjoys sharing his art.

So if you done something better why not share it instead of yelling around like a 1000 years old dumb man.

Do not hide your art, Share.

Regards.

I agree with rejectEd. Lots of people here edit pictures to their own personal taste before putting them on their desktops, but we don't all repost them as comments. I don't know that it's necessary, helpful, or especially respectful of the artists to post your own personal edits, but that's just my opinion. It may be worth keeping your individual edits to yourself like the rest of us because you may like them more than the original, but as seen by others' responses to your previous edits, not everyone else will agree.

@jd554
just for an example visit this thread:
http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/details/2287/boat_hut.html

The artist of the photo personally thanked the one who edited his picture cause he didn't even know how to do it!

I just don't understand why some of you guys are so ignorant and act like kids. What is it that you insist on so much!? I mean just come on! You don't have to read all comments. Just bypass the one you don't like.

None of the artist ever told anything about not liking the edited versions. It's just the same in music. No one would ever dislike to see his track being remixed!

Hopefully you're not the admin of this website.

I have a suggestion for the admin though. It's goo idea to have a seperate part for each thread so other people can come and add their own edited versions with their own thumbnails showing up in smaller size under the original art. You can even consider adding a rating system for them.

@sabern
It's not "his" art to mess bout with. And who is arrogant enough to re-submit someone else's work as their own "improvement".
There are hundreds of image editing programs out there. Any dufus can do what you guys are doing. Don't be so pretentious .

@rejectEd
Thanks for compliment!

I never claimed if I know alot more than you, sir, and I would never even if I get the proffesional degree! I really don't get what is it that you're so angry about.

Hope this argument would not cause the World War III to happen.

Hi rejectED,

You are right, it's not my art. But, I also never claim it is my art, and I don't say it is an improvement either, that's up to you to decide.
But even if only one other person would like it, it still would've been worthwile to post it.

I thought IFL is there for the purpose of sharing your awesome pictures with other people on the internet.
If so, why would sharing a retouched copy of the same image in the same thread be immoral?

I simply wanted to save others the hassle, nothing more.
If you don't like it, don't download it - it's that simple.

I do get your point though, but on a website that is all about sharing anyways I think it's rather irrelevant.

Have a good day :)

It's a nice picture and a very good wallpaper, the nois is quite irrelevant until somebody tries to find it with a loupe. Wallpapers usually occupy the out-of-focus part of the eye anyway.

Psilocybe has done a good thing providing a link to his attempt to remove the noise. If you don't want to dig, you don't have to. Everybody has a right to contribute the way she or he prefers. I found Psilocybe's version useful and because I'm lazy I am using that one.

I just want to say thanks for absolutely everyones comments. I appreciate the feedback, and can only grow as an artist from it. I just realised this photo was actually taken on my little Olympus mju770, not my D90... it's all I had on me to capture the moment. I understand both sides to the argument, and I've taken both onside. If I knew how to use PS, I may have tried t do it myself, but I'm only new to this sort of thing. Thanks again
