Bisti Badlands

By BenD
September 2nd, 2010

Taken at sunset in the Bisti Wilderness, New Mexico. This was such a beautiful and fascinating spot we visited in New Mexico. The Bisti Badlands is a "scenic and colorful expanse of undulating mounds and unusual eroded rocks" located along highway 371 in quite literally the middle of nowhere. It's so far from anywhere that the silence seems absolute and a little eerie. If you ever have a chance to check it out I strongly suggest it.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM, Adobe Photoshop CS5.

the description you provide sounds relaxing... cant tell the temperature out there, but it could be cold or hot.. either way, great shot!

always happy to see a voted pic make it to the selection.

Nice capture. It's been years since I visited there and it is just as spooky as I remember. Great place to play hide and seek when I was a kid because it is so quiet it can get a little scary.

I'm sure more qualified people can pick apart this shot for details but I like it so none from me.

It's a nice change from all of the landscape desktops that normally appear; they're great, but some variety is appreciated.

Parts of it are rather shaded. Not really sure if that's a plus or minus though :P

I love the softness of the rocks in this photo. I'm also a big fan of the sky in this shot, it's really simple yet has a complex depth to it.

I think it looks great. I really don't have much else to add.

This is a spectacular image. The play of fading light across the rocks is voluptuous. There appear to be extreme winds attenuating the clouds at high altitude, which adds movement and amplifies the aspect of foreboding that pervades the shot as night moves inevitably closer.

I see nothing to criticize in this shot. Shadows? Well, of course. The sun is setting; shadows are natural at that time of day.

I love this picture! Not just the colors, content, and composition; but also the scale. I grew up in the desert, so I know how big the bush and pebbles are on the left side of the photo. This gives a really interesting scale effect: What's right in front of the camera is probably pretty small, and the formations in the distance much larger. Your photo reminds me of being a kid and imagining endless, mysterious worlds all within a relatively small physical space. Your thoughtfulness is taking and talent in capturing it are remarkable. Thanks for posting this!

It *almost* looks like the image is "squished" or was scaled w/o preserving proportions. I'm sure this is how the location really looks in real-life, so it makes for a great mesmerizing effect! I wouldn't change the pic. The site is making me leave some criticism. Great photo!

Thank you everybody for your compliments and your votes! There was a storm coming that night which made some interesting cloud cover, but it eventually drove us out of our camping spot that night : (

@Mercyflush64
Dude you got to explore this place multiple times? I'm jealous! This would defiantly be the most bad ass place to play hide and seek or capture the flag, though I'd be afraid of running into a rattlesnake.

Wow, I think this is one of the more amazing photos to pop up here in the last few weeks.

I love all the crazy curves and shapes in the rocks... Great shot!
