To change the finder icon:

1. Go to System/Library/CoreServices and control-click Dock.app
2. Click 'Show Package Contents'
3. A separate window should open with one folder called 'Contents'
4. Go to Contents/Resources
5. In this folder is a file called 'finder.png' - Replace it with the finder.png that you downloaded.

Trash works the same way - there are 'trashempty.png' and 'trashfull.png' files in the same folder.

Same here. I changed the icons to .png extensions and that still didn't work. I even took out the old one and restarted my computer, but nothing. Please help.

try deleting the cache at /Private/Var/Folders
open tu folder
open the subfolder (long name)
then -Caches-
try deleting "com.apple.dock.iconcache"
then restart the Dock by using killall Dock in the Terminal Utility

for you that dont know how to change your finder icon, you have to download a program called candybar. it allows you to change it. but only for 30 days, unless you want to pay for the program

(on snow leopard) It doesn't seem to work because the files are not in .png format and when renaming them to .png they don't contain anything

The icons are nice but some more color combinations would be nicer, and compatibility with snow leopard. Make them into .png format from the begining.

It is much easier to click the application icon that you want to change and click: Get Info.
Then you drag your desired replacement icon to the top left hand corner and drop it in.
There's your new icon :)

Search the web for the article, "Changing icons in El Capitan", by Nathan Ansel. The above suggestions are partly correct, but you must first turn off SIP, Apple's "sandboxing" system. Nathan makes it easy. I've done it many times, in fact, almost every time I perform a system update and my Safari icon gets changed.
