really like the composition and the muted colors on this one.

a wallpaper should have one primary attribute above anything else: it should be pleasant to look at. this picture fails in that regard miserably. it's not only unpleasant to look at, it's outright uncomfortable (i'm getting the headache causing effect of moving parallel stripes you see when someone on TV is wearing a shirt with dense parallel stripes -anyone else sees it?).

I really like this photo. I agree with Beans that the muted colors make the composition.

@ Barney Gumble: The first part of your comment was creditable (I do see how some would lot like the lines), but then you added that PS line and that made your comment lose all credibility.

whoa! offensive and inflammatory? i was merely making a reference to an offensive and vulgar comment made by the american african person a few days ago. that comment is still there, and is as offensive as ever.

I could see how at first glance in just a thumbnail people may not find it so aesthetically pleasing. But I think that's only because it's put up against so many wallpapers that are extremely vibrant such as all the sunsets and such. But if you actually blow it up to size and put it on your desktop it's quite awesome. It was shot extremely well.

I like it, but a vibrant alternative would be nice as well.

I think people have to take into consideration the environment in which a computer is placed. Sometimes extremely vibrant colors don't fit and a calmer more chromatic background suits better.

But hey, it's just my opinion.

I'm actually going to have to agree with Barney Gumble on this somewhat. I didn't like it very well just from a first perspective because it's a bit muted for my taste, but I gave it an honest go on my monitor anyway. On a 30 inch monitor this image is actually sort of painful on the eyes. I'm not sure what it is, perhaps because the background is mostly white but still grainy. I would like to see a colored version, though Saguaro Cacti are usually rotting quite a bit and aren't always the prettiest things to look at close up.

(btw john mcain is from arizona. i think we need more pictures like this that shows real things, and "strait talk', then most liberel shots on here that arew mostly ELITEST.......

p.s well my old email is BLOCKED...... great way to suport free speech!!

I agree with Madvillainy. Even without taking into account any artistic concepts of focal point and composition, I'm very impressed with how this frames the icons and taskbar on both Windows and OSX machines. The chromatic tone works great one my MacBook Pro. Was there any post processing to get the 'aura' around the saguaro?

Here is wisdom: if you don't have anything nice to say, then do not say anything at all. After all, what's the point in making any sort of negative comment about somebody's artwork? If you don't it, then keep moving.

I, for one, am commenting because I appreciate this piece. But I haven't added it to my rotation yet. I have a feeling that I will. It's very nice, and very well done. Thank you for posting it. I'm just sorry that we have negative people like Barney Gumble. We have to remember that one person cannot please everyone, so therefore it's wise to keep our displeased comments to ourselves, and then forget them in light of this wisdom.
