Horsehead Nebula
By chriscologne
April 15th, 2009
I used a public domain NASA image of the Horsehead nebula, removed the noise and errors and optimized the color range and saturation.
You can find the unedited original here: http://www.noao.edu/image_gallery/html/im0661.html
Minimum credit line: T.A.Rector (NOAO/AURA/NSF) and Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA/NASA)

Very nice. It almost looks like an Apple desktop! Great job!

When I got onto the site, I was thinking I wanted a new space picture, and what was the first wallpaper I saw? This one! Great job with taking the NASA photo and making it more wallpaper-esque. The colors look great, very clean looking picture.

This is awesome. Please make more backgrounds like this!! This website needs more space shots. The Tarantula Nebula would make a great background.

You seem to have lost the nuances in the "waves" of the nebula. Good effort.

This is how would have done the image.

Banding is apparent at fullsize, the wallpaper looks good at 1680x1050

Nice edit! I'd say Leopard's wallpaper looks like the nebula (not the other way around), but hey, Apple is a tad other-worldly.

Excuse my obtuseness, but to what noise and errors are you referring? Does the noise consist of nebular gases and particles? If so, then it isn't really noise at all. Yes, many times Nasa enhances their images for the purpose of clarity and to make more subtle features more pronounced. This image to me is akin to altering the Mona Lisa. This shot has been in wide circulation for some time. Just one old grumpy man's opinion.
@stubulman(/grumpy old man)
Why dont you just look at the original .. there is plenty of noise which is not gas or particles. Looks to me like lense flares (not sure what they are called in English) and in the upper right corner you can see the line where two images are concatenated.
Obtuseness not excused.
@chriscologne .. nice edit. Id love to see more of this kind.

I had your wallpaper as my desktop for a week, I thought it was great. I have now read some comments here (claytontullos/stubulman) and viewed the original. The original in my opinion is far far better! The nuances, detail and overall depth of the original is fantastic, and easily of good enough quality to be a desktop wallpaper without editing.
I'm also very surprised that you have omitted / deleted a major feature of the original. In the mid/lower left hand corner there should be a white nebula(?). So I'd have to conclude that this wallpaper has a big dose of 'poetic license' and is far too much of a compromise for the sake of a 'clean' image.
Keep it real!
