What an amazing photo, does make me feel somewhat depressed due to lack of colour but I understand the reasons for it. Well done!

Thanks guys.

@WillLeech, this was taken just after sunrise when the colours had all but gone. In fact I was going to bin this shot because of the muted colours, but converting to B&W brought out the tones pretty well. I have another shot from the same place with nice colours - maybe I will submit it one day.

@austen, all of new Zealand is a beautiful landscape :P Great shot Chris as always. I think the B&W compliments the shape of the subject.

@Joel, yeah same place but Kah Kit Yoong's shots are just incredible!

I would like to see the color version, just for curiosity..but I think you chose to change it in B&W because it really looks like another planet, especially with those strange rocks on the fore and background..they look like some kind of alien spaceships!

Another nice one Chris. Love the tones.

can't say i dislike it, but it's just so so. admittedly it's tough to make a captivating black and white photo of a landscape. colors are 50% of any landscape shot, what do you have left when they're gone?

perhaps the artificial ball-like rocks help the picture, and while they might look distracting in a conventional color photo, here they add to the surreality started by the B&W.

the photo is perfect technically, but in spite of the crisp sharpness notice that there's hardly any detail in it. almost none! the more i look at it the less i like it.

Holy hell. I've been a fan of your stuff for a while now, but this is just too compelling not to comment. Thanks for the new wallpaper.

Also, to Burn Baby Burn, we're each entitled to our own opinions, of course, but I fear you are missing out on some of the best landscape photography ever captured (uh...Ansel Adams?) if you ignore black and white. Just my 2 cents.

@Burn. As I'm writing this your comment is rated "unhelpful". While I disagree with your comment it certainly wasn't written in an unnecessary way. I think it's going to take many of us a little while to remember not to click anything at all if we disagree. I keep forgetting myself. Oh well. It'll work itself out in time.

I agree with Burn Baby Burn completely, and I think that comments like his/hers are valuable because I know Chris Gin can do better. He's so talented that he can take our constructive feedback and use it, whereas amateurs often post to IFL just for the ego-boost that comes from unanimous compliments. The image is crisp, but detail happens almost accidentally and without structured use... Ansel Adams may have been a BW photographer, but he did not overlook the value of detail, which I feel Chris Gin has in this photograph.

All this aside, I am still using it as my wallpaper at the moment.

@Burn/Batman_360, I agree the composition is pretty ordinary. One of the other reasons I originally binned this shot was the messy and unstructured foreground, but I felt the tones and contrast in B&W rescued it a bit.

It's difficult getting a good composition at this beach - the boulders and rocks are just scattered everywhere and it's hard to get a clean shot (unless you focus on just one or two boulders, like in Kah Kit Yoong's shots).

Oops, the above comment was from me - posted from a computer at work where my colleague was still logged in!

In my opinion, Chris, and I'm not a photographer or artist, the best part about your landscapes is the beautiful blend of colour you bring out. It's that blend which makes most of us recognise your work from the thumbnail.

I'm not saying this is a bad image, mind. It's sharp & focused, and has a hint of the surreal. That said, IDK if I'll put it as my wallpaper or not...it might grow on me.

After looking at the image for longer, I want to make one more comment.

The most interesting thing about the "tones" you speak of, to me, is the way the spherical boulders have such smooth tone gradient while the jagged rocks change from light face to dark face pretty drastically. Adjacent sides of a jagged rock can have sharply conflicting levels of tone. That is what gives the boulders their "alien" feel, other than their geometric peculiarity. Spheres don't come alone every day in the wild, don'tcha know!

For that reason, I enjoy your photo.

I looked at this picture and was completely speechless. This picture is priceless. Words cannot describe it. The black and white looks so rich on it. It's EXTREMELY unique looking; definitely one of a kind. I like how you chose to make it in black and white because it fits it best. It makes it look very exclusive. Not only that, but I believe black and white photography definitely look better over color in many ways. If this picture is not a winner, then I don't know what is.

There's something about the spheres on the beach that makes this picture worth looking at.
